Tigger
I need a bit of help regarding dashboard switches for my caterham re-build. The car is at the 7 workshop so I'm working from memory which is failing me when it comes to operation and warning lights. Rather than going with the old square switches I'm probably changing to toggles, They're shinier My questions are: Headlights and side lights - Are these controlled by a 3 position switch (off/on/on) or 2 separate (on/off) switches? Main beam - Is this controlled by a separate on/off switch or as a 3rd position on the headlight switch (if the latter then the previous question pretty much answers itself!) Wipers (a little academic as I'm going aero but want to install a switch to allow retro-fit.) Is the wiper motor single speed or 2-speed?
Member Jonathan Kay Posted August 31, 2015 Member Share Posted August 31, 2015 Off/ side/ head. One switch: main/ dip.Another switch: flash.NB: High intensity rear only works on dipped headlamps.Wipers: Mine are two-speed with the secret intermittent setting of a brief on-off.Wouid you like a wiring diagram?Jonathan
Tigger
Thanks Jonathan,So there are basically three switches for the lights.1 x three position switch - off / on / on - side lights / headlights http://www.carbuildersolutions.com/uk/knurled-ring-toggle-switch-off-on-on-3-position1 x two position switch - on / on change over - main / dip http://www.carbuildersolutions.com/uk/knurled-ring-toggle-switch-on-on-changeover-double-pole1 x Momentary switch - on / off spring return - flash. http://www.carbuildersolutions.com/uk/knurled-ring-toggle-switch-off-on-spring-returnOoo a wiring diagram... yes please :)Originally I was thinking about going with the billet push buttons but was disuaded as I was told that the relays attached to each switch make wiring a bit of a pig, is this true?Tim

Roger Ford
If you're replacing the switches with toggles, you don't need to stick with the same layout.Mine uses On-On-Momentary for High / Low / Flash, which removes one switch.
Tigger
Hi Roger,So getting my head round this...1 x switch for lights on and off.1 x switch where the default centre position is dip, flick up is high beam, flick down is flash.Have I got that right?Tim
Roger Ford
That sounds like you're describing MOM-ON-MOMYou want ON-ON-MOMThere's no "default" position, the switch can be up or centre (main or dip), with a sprung downward "flick" (if you like) for flash (although it's true that by default you'll have it on dip - see last para). And your "1 x switch for lights on and off" should be "1 x switch for lights off, sidelights on, or headlights on" (OFF-ON-ON). The dip/flash switch did provide me with one, mainly aesthetic issue. I wanted the "normal" position for all switches to be pointing up, so I could check with a quick scan of the dash that everything was off. But that would have meant having dip beam at the top, and you'd have to go through main to get to flash. So I had to compromise that the normal position for that switch was the middle position. Tigger
That's pretty clear. Thanks Roger. The aesthetic issue is a good one. I may consider having one switch away from the main bank, on the other side of the steering wheel as a result.Incidently what did you do about the warning lights and/or decals. I'm currently looking at some nice aluminium LED ones, but they are quite pricey! Tim
Roger Ford
Warning lights - didn't use any, they're all in my dash (Racelogic Dash 2). Actually I do have just one green LED to tell me the ignition is on - I used a 5mm LED indicator from Polevolt (ref LED5GFC)Decals: didn't use any either. Keeps the MOT man guessing (actually I stuck some tempary P-Touch labels on for the first MOT, but didn't bother for the second).
Member Jonathan Kay Posted September 1, 2015 Member Share Posted September 1, 2015 Did the diagrams arrive?JonathanPS: On the aesthetics... how about a toggle extension as retrfitted to many original Minis? If it's longer AND at a different angle it might be less offensive.
