Light Goods Vehicle?

Just had a V11 tax renewal for an R400 I acquired recently and was surprised to see it classed as private/light goods! A quick call to the DVLA and they told me as they had no record of emissions for this vehicle it was classed as PLG  and tax is £230 for the year.

Just wondering if any R400 owners have come across this on their V11?

thanks

Chris

Yup, it's all down to the fact that our funny little cars are not type-approved (hence the need for IVA testing). As a result, there's no recorded emissions data on the V5C, and therefore the CO2-based tax tables don't apply.  Instead, DVLA simply use the TC11 class (Private or Light Goods) that applies to cars and light goods vehicles registered before 1 March 2001, charging £230 for engines over 1549cc (£145 for smaller ones).

Given that an R400 (and most larger-engined 7s) would, in theory, probably fall into at least Band J (186-200g/km CO2, £265), you could argue that £230 is not unreasonable!  For comparison, an early 2014 Mondeo 2.0 Duratec just squeezes into Band I (£225), while a 2008 model is Band J.

I thought it was steep as my Fiat 500 is £30 a year. (It's zero on another 500 in the range, but costs £1200 more to buy...but the salesman seemed to think the zero rating outweighed that. He's right, ifs I'd kept it for 30 years!).

Mind you,  I felt this was more than offset by how cheap the 7 is to insure. I was amazed how cheap it was.

Can't be too long before the road tax is free as my 7 is getting on too.
