Sound meter anyone?

Hello all,

Does anyone have a sound meter I could borrow?  Either locally, or I can pay the costs of (insured) shipping?

I know you can buy cheep ones on eBay or use a phone, but neither are very accurate.  I know I could also head off to a track and ask them to do a static test, but I would appreciate a few hours with a decent one so I can try with my different baffles in (which take half an hour to swap!) and also do a drive-by.

I wish that someone would do a comparison specifically for 7 purposes of dedicated sound meters with smart 'phones. 

The studies are pretty impressive:

If I put up the £2.99 for SPLnFFT would you consider trying it back-to-back with the dedicated meter?

Well that seems fair, if someone can sort me out with a meter, I will do the exact same tests with an iPhone too and see what we get.

It is a well documented fact that Apple (and probably more so the many Android manufacturers) use different components even when building even the same model.  So it would also be interesting to compare an early Vs late example of the same model and see if they give similar results too...

I of course will have to lower myself to using an iBone, something I have strictly avoided on moral grounds so far, but I can probably make an exception this once in the interests of science *yuck*

When you say baffles do you mean complete cans or different noise reducing accessories ? 

I have been impressed with my decibel slayer and will be hoping to get a comparison at Cadwell with and without at same time 

it would be good to have some definitive information based on all the factors being constant

By baffles I mean removable inserts inside the can.

The full story here is that I had Powerspeed fit me a full 4-2-1 system.  One of the prerequisites was that it didn't make my car any louder but on my first event at Donington I got black flagged at 98.8db on a drive-by (limit was 98db).  I have never had any issues before, so I went back and they were really helpful and have made me two removable inserts of differing degrees of "bafflement".  It takes about 20 mins to swap them over and easily done track-side should the need arise.  But... I can't afford to be black flagged having driven 5 hours to Anglesey and paid for a day!  So I am somewhat nervous and need to prove that with the most "baffling" baffle in I am well below the limits...

Do the Decibel Slayers replace the end cap of the can?  The reason I ask is that my whole can is supported by the pipe that comes out of the end cap, so without that it won't work...

Do they impact power much?  I notice even with my baffles in there is a noticeable hit.

Guess it depends on how much power you are running 

the driving miss daisy tour at Goodwood last week was running the same times with and without the slayer

The  slayer fits externally on the last 10mm of the pipe

A little over 180bhp from a 1.8 k-series.

Ahhhh, that just fits over the very end of the pipe (i.e. its 2-3 inches in diameter)?  It looked to me like it replaced the end cap of the main can (i.e. 7 inches in diameter), not just the pipe. 

If that is the case, how big is your pipe?  Mine is 61mm but has a rolled end which takes it to 71mm.  Do you think it would fit over the rolled end?

There are cheep options from Maplin, Amazon, eBay etc but like them all, this bit of the Maplin spec kills it: "accurate to approximately ±3.5dB"

Which means it really isn't very good.  The ones that are accurate to a useful degree seem to cost hundreds of pounds.
