steering rack gaiters

RS2000

Recommended Posts

I have checked out the archive and read that there is a way of changing the gaiters without having to split the track rod end from the hub steering arm, unfortunately I can't quite work out how that works

here is an annotated picture of the set up - you can see here I have loosed off one turn the locknut (A), but I'm not sure which bits are meant to come out of what

(D) indicates a flat which is hidden underneath the current (split) gaiter...

Anyone explain using my annotations what I need to do please?

Thanks

Unscrew the track rod from the extension B using a spanner on flat D. Remove and replace gaiter and refit. Don't forget to mark/count threads so you get tracking back as it was.

Hi Chris,

Strangely enough just did a quick check before MOT this week and found that I also have a split gaiter, looks like an easier job than I thought, thanks!!

Are you up for the Fish and Chip run again?

Regards Paul.

It is the nearside one, raided my spares collection and found three offside ones so obviously have always had the nearside one fail on previous cars!!

Managed to change one side before ran out of light. Thought I'd be clever and gaffer tape the lock nut in place having loosened it off exactly one turn... Doh stupid boy... however I counted everything and even photo'd it to make sure I could get it all back in the right place

I'll do the other side tomorrow, not split but showing signs of cracking around the tie wrap...
