A Beautiful Day  in the Neighborhood - Much loved , impossibly decent US kids TV presenter meets  a hard bitten journalist with family issues . Tom Hanks compelling in the title role of a truly lovely, feel good  film .As has been said , he really is the new James Stewart

Jo Jo Rabbit - the greatly overrated 1917 will win lots of Oscars but this is the film that deserves them far more . Mel Brooks showed us in The Producers that it is possible to make a funny film about Nazis . This one is wonderful - young lad signs up for Hitler Youth , spurred on by his imaginary (but very real ) friend Adolf Hitler (played by director Taika Waititi ). But mum (Scarlett Johansson ) is in the resistance and has hidden a young Jewish girl in her home  This film is very , very funny,  shocking too,  and the ending is both thrilling and joyous . It is one of those films you have to sit down for a few minutes after it ends. Terrific soundtrack - opening with the  rarely heard Komm , gibt mir deine Hand   by The Beatles . And the Bowie track used (I won't say which ) .has never had a better setting. I had something in my eye - again - but so did everyone else .

So , does Parasite deserve its clutch of Oscars ? I saw it today and thought it wasn't perfect , but it is a very clever film and it is stunning to watch on the big screen. The premise is simple - broke but clever Korean family inveigles its way , one by one into domestic and teaching duties for a very rich family . Stuff happens - and the trick is that you never quite expect most of the twists and turns of the plot . It is very funny and (this I didn't expect ) quite shockingly violent .

Of films I've enjoyed in the last year  The Goldfinch , Jo Jo Rabbit , Uncut Gems and Once upon a Time in Hollywood were all better , especially the latter . And if  Tarantino had included Parasite's level of violence h';d have been roasted by the critics .

Hmm not sure it would be my 1st choice.

We found ourselves in a hotel last night watching Interstellar. I know it is not new but what a complete and utter pile of codswallop.

Just come back from 1917. We really enjoyed it and fond it completely engaging.  From a cinematography point of view I was slightly distracted by trying to work out how it was all filmed.  Just looked like it was all done from a drone.

Excellent straight documentary on Disney.

(Followed last night by an interview with Taylor-Johnson, continuing the tradition of her not saying anything interesting, and a bizarre fragmented ragbag study of the family in film.)

The whole of the judging panel for the Cesar's (French equivelent to the Oscars) has resigned on mass over controversy from them nominating  Roman Polanski for 12 awards

Judge the art, not the artist. Whistle

Oh you are right of course but it is a slippery slope. Do we judge Kennedy by his philandering or by his politics, Riefenstahl by her films or the politics  behind them. or Presley by Jailhouse Rock or pills  and peanut butter sandwiches ? I don';t like the prevailing Twitter pile -in , lynch mob mentality one little bit - see Kevin Spacey - not found guilty of anything but career wrecked and a pariah .

Hmm perhaps a debate for another thread but  where would he be today if he had been tried, proved guilty, done his time and returned to film?  I would guess he has a great talent so not far from where he is today. Just that he has been on the run for god knows how many years.
