And a concrete proposal: 60 ha of parking spaces into cycle paths.

It's like Joni Mitchell only in reverse.

If Amazon and co is one villain of congestion, another is Uber and its imitators. After the ride-hailing app reached London in 2013, the number of licensed private-hire vehicles surged, from 49,800 to 87,400 by 2017.

Their numbers far outstrip the 21,000 black cabs in London, but without the dedicated ranks where traditional taxis can stop. The upshot is that many drivers simply circle and wait for customers, creating traffic that doesn’t yet know where it is going. According to Calderato, by early 2019, “about 28% of them were empty”.

But Uber, other private hire vehicles and even black cabs were never the answer because they remain as four wheels for (mostly) single occupancy.

a problem for buses throughout his operation, from Plymouth to Newcastle and East Anglia to Manchester: “Congestion has increased by 14% across all UK cities. If we’ve got slower speeds, we either accept that the frequency of the bus will be less, or we put more cost in – and fares up. Either way, we lose passengers. For every 10% increase in congestion, there’s a corresponding 10% decrease in passenger numbers.”

More on buses.

How can we make trolley-buses work well? Or do we use battery & super-capacitor technology to free them from wires?

I've never understood why they aren't used more. What's the advantage of light railways = trams that overcomes the massively greater capital cost?

High Court ruling on the application for a third runway at Heathrow... illegal.

Until the next attempt.

Guardian: "Luxembourg is to become the first country to offer a free public transport system, as the government tries to reduce particularly dense car traffic."

Trolley buses: what happened with the flywheel-powered ones trialled in Oxford? https://www.smmt.co.uk/2015/06/gkn-hybrid-power-flywheels-in-750-uk-buses/

(Carbon fibre is intuitively wrong for a flywheel, you want something heavy not something famed for its lightness, but I'm sure they know what they're doing.  This is more my style "The Montezooma's Revenge roller coaster at Knott's Berry Farm was the first flywheel-launched roller coaster in the world and is the last ride of its kind still operating in the United States. The ride uses a 7.6 tonnes flywheel to accelerate the train to 55 miles per hour (89 km/h) in 4.5 seconds.")

Increasing amounts of rotation energy can be stored in the flywheel until the rotor shatters. This happens when the hoop stress within the rotor exceeds the ultimate tensile strength of the rotor material.
