I've only got five speed box as only do touring ,,,no problem with noise bought a set of Senna wireless head phones ,,only problem now is can hear the wife rabbiting on
6 speed + 3.9 diff in my 260bhp Duratec - works brilliantly on track but I guess 5000rpm on the motorway might be tiring for some - I just wear ear plugs!
Me too, love the sixspeed, it's where my fun is.

I loved my six speed - it made the whole thing feel so much more urgent . And while it is low geared , that is only by the standard of recent road cars , nearly all of which are ludicrously over- geared in the interest of economy and quiet . Older sports cars often had similar gearing to a six speed Seven - if memory serves , an Elan's mph/1000 rpm in top was in the 17s . A Ferrari Dino was about 18 - and nobody complained.
Yes John you are correct. Quick gear calculations for the Elan S1 S2 S3 with 3.9 final drive fitted with skinny 145 80 13 tyres gives 16.3mph/1000 rpm in top; 17.2 mph for later 3.7 diff; finally 18.2 mph for optional 3.55 in the S3 S/E and Sprint.
So the perennial question - 6 speed or reworked 5 speed with better ratios? I expect the answer depends how you use the car.
I view my five speed as a three gear box. First is always too high and not required except for towing a caravan, fifth is overdrive for motorways so that leaves three gears for fun.
edit: yes my 5 speed is modified BGH for "long" first".
The other factor is the six speed is out of production now.
The BGH ratios are still poor for a 7 though... the best 1st gear ratio they offer is 2.66
put the correct ones in and its perfect - mated with the correct final drive and wheel size and assuming you have sufficient torque...
Tracsport do some nice 6 speed bits too!
