The Great North September Blat

Ok, OK , I admit, the title may be overly grand, but it was the Great North Run yesterday and well, the North is pretty great....

Anyhows, subject to weather and a chinwag at the monthly meet this coming Wednesday, planning for Sunday 16th. Meeting at Billingham Services (A19/A689 junction) for food, fuel and coffee at 9-9.30, then heading across to Guisborough Subway (oooh we do all the swanky places oop North) for a secondary meeting point for 10 with an aim to start the blat proper at 10.30. Route subject to tweaks but something like.....Birk Brow, Casleton, across Blakey Ridge and down to Hutton Le Hole. Then Pickering and then back northward up past Dalby Forest toward Sleights. We will perhaps go via Goathland (depending on how many Heartbeat fans are in attendance), head to Danby and stopping at the Birk Brow car park for cheerios (pleasantries as opposed to breakfast cereal). There'll be stops along the way for refreshments etc. About 90 or so miles in a sort of circle. Let me know if you fancy joining or catch me on Wednesday at the Old Mill if you're there.

Not defecting just business in London but staying out near Tunbridge Wells. Had my first ride on the tube for many years hell to think folk have to put up with that everyday. A milliseconds delay at a ticket machine and the hot breath of enraged commuters wafts over you! Sprinting down escalators whats all that about?

Weather sunny and warm today off to Chartwell and Oxted trimming tomorrow.

Weather permitting, I’m certainly hoping to make this one. It will be an excellent opportunity for my first run out with others, on roads that I’m familiar with. It will also be my first chance to meet up with some of the North East members, as I’ve not yet managed to make a North East meeting.

After some spirited debate at last night’s meeting, we (eventually) agreed on a finalised route for Sunday’s blat. So, today, I have ignored it and come up with an alternative! However, it’s still a good ‘un!

The sun WILL be shining, NO-ONE will get lost, my car WILL NOT require a push start and much merriment WILL be had!

Meet at 9 to 9.30 at Wolviston Services (A19/A689 junction). We'll then head down the A19 at around 9.45 to 10 and pick up the A174 (couple of junctions after the Tees flyover). We'll take the 2nd exit from the 174 and head towards Coulby Newham and then Stokesley. From Stokesley, we'll head through Great Ayton and onto the Guisborough by-pass and stop at the Subway/Co-Op Petrol station (to meet some others).

At about 11, we'll follow the route linked below (should be a click to open fingers crossed – have included both a Facebook link and a Google link). Brian M, John R, James K & Paul A are all familiar with this route/area so we will (subject to how many cars) split the group with a couple of cars behind each of Brain, John, James & Paul A. First leg (Guisborough to Sleights) should take about 1.15 - 1.30hrs and we will stop at the fish and chip shop where there is ample parking. John R will head this section and set a sensible pace, with opportunity to enjoy some fast flowing roads and views. From Sleights, Brian M will lead us on and we are going to double back slightly to Goathland and then across to Rosedale Abbey. Roads will get skinnier but should be quiet and a good "7" road. From there, back to and crossing Blakey Ridge to do some up-hill and down dale on some smaller roads (but all easily passable in a 7) finally ending up at the Buck Inn in Great Ayton should anyone require a coffee or alike.

Should be a cracking day out and well worthy of any travels you do to get there. If you are planning on coming, please can you drop me a line so I have some idea of numbers. See you Sunday

Pleasure to meet both you and Zoe. Thanks for trekking up to join us. Turned out to be a cracker, really good roads and mainly free of traffic (though the 3 seperate sheep who wanted to jump out and headbutt the front my car when passing at speed were slightly hairy moments!)
