Any Caterham factory or IVA news?
Afternoon! I have a 420R on the way, that was initially due shortly after lockdown started. I have a pic from the factory of my chassis with dashboard but no engine from a few weeks ago. I hear from Caterham they were back in the factory last Monday. I'm eager to hear speculation, rumours or personal experience about dates for IVAs, or if there is a big backlog etc. Could IVAs be done remotely? I've been on call between two hospitals in a rural county with empty roads over lockdown, kicking myself for not having put down the deposit 3 weeks earlier!

HI George. I have a home built car with CC, Crawley for PBC and IVA, it's been there for 10weeks!. Below is a copy of an email I got from Colin Vaughan, CC Workshop Co-ord last week. Whilst some 'magic things' are being achieved remotely during COVID, I can't see IVA's being one of them.

We are pleased to say we are back in our Gatwick branch after the COVID-19 lock down. I would like to start by saying thank you to everyone for your understanding and patience in these very strange unprecedented times we are living through. However to keep within the guidelines of the government we have returned as a small team and we are going through everything here at Gatwick and trying to get us up to fully operational as soon as possible. We will be in contact with you via email or by phone over the next week or so. We understand your frustrations as during lock down it has been perfect Seven conditions dry and sunny. We will endeavor to get your Sevens back to you as soon as we can so you can enjoy your cars.

In addition, if you go into the DVSA website there is a bit there saying what they are doing and planning in order to alleviate the IVA backlog. There is also a list of categories that can apply now for an early IVA. Home Built Kit Cars are Category 6.

I am in the same boat, my test was canceled on 1st April.  On the email it said they will reschedule and email me the new date.

I have seen the "priority" schema, but I can't see how we can class a Caterham as helping with the covid effort.

Thanks for the comments. I'd imagine Caterham will be lobbying hard to get IVAs done as soon as possible, and it would be good for UK manufacturing! If I was in responsible for shifting a backlog of assessments I'd be considering allowing some self assessment with lots of photographs for firms such as Caterham making reproducible and familiar cars. Possibly wishful thinking though! Do factory built cars ever.get bounced back by VOSA at IVA?

There is a tale of a certain manufacturer whose cars all looked identical having a 100% pass rate at IVA. The Vehicle Examiner thought this was both impressive and suspicious, so he put a small mark on the chassis.

Lo and behold, the manufacturer swapped chassis plates and sent the thing through again, and again, and again.

The manufacturer was warned and stopped.

No one knows how many IVAs this chassis went through, but it was quite a few.

So there is some news, but no actual dates yet when testing will resume.  The IVA priority form can now be used to apply for priority if you have a TAS number for you application.  Caterham factory builds will have a higher priority over amateur builds, being at position 3 where as kit builders are lowest on the list at 6.   I was informed they may decide to inspect via video call (not sure how that's going to work).

interesting but how will the insect the emmisions, lights brake pedal pressure etc etc by video link....

I would be more helpful if the testers in the stations adopted a more acceptable work ethic - instead of spending hours washing and polishing their own cars.

Agreed, lets see how this pans out.
