Asthma & Masks

While paying for fuel today (no pay at pump option) the person before me and the person after me (only 2 customers allowed in the shop at a time) did not wear masks and when challenged both claimed to have asthma and were exempt.

What are the chances of that happening? I'd have thought for the few minutes wearing it indoors people with bronchial problems already would do their utmost to prevent infection?

The cynical part of me thinks they were lying and just couldn't be ar$ed or have authority issues!

I'd lay odds your cynicism was well founded Ian.

Not only are they more than likely full of crap, it's also a stupid excuse.  Increasing their chances of contracting an illness that affects the respiratory system would be moronic if they were a severe asthma sufferer.  I also don't believe that wearing a small bit of cloth (that's designed to be breathable) across your face provides any significant restriction.

Unfortunately the self entitled will do what they want until physically stopped.  Just look at some of the threads on Blatchat from the start of lockdown for some more examples.

Unless they have severe asthma, they should not be exempt as masks don't reduce the oxygen supply.

I have asthma, as does my son.  Both thankfully mild (mine was much more serious as a kid) and we have no issues wearing masks.  My mate's wife has serious asthma, the kind that hospitalises her sometimes.  She's in the shielding group, but gave birth during lockdown so has had to go to hospital appointments with the baby and wear a mask, and she's fine as well.

I'd say they were being ***** and faking it.

Interestingly, unless you have severe asthma then there's little evidence that your Covid-19 risk differs much.  Certainly the other risk factors (age, weight etc) have a much greater effect (given me and the boy have asthma, I've been keeping a close eye on things!).

I'm lucky to have good health at 53. Having spent several years looking after my late father, along with my sisters, we were paranoid about passing something on from us or his grandchildren and great grandchildren, that we would brush off but could ultimately kill him.

I'd be mortified if an infection I had killed another human when transmission could have been avoided.

Quietly ignoring people breaking the guideines is the safest option. You don't want to be near people who are angry and shouting.

Surely a face visor would not cause asthma sufferers any problems and is an acceptable face covering. What would be their excuse. Vanity. I agree more than likely lying.
