I have booked to go to "Love Sarah" next week.

I suspect it might be a bit lightweight but I have a particular reason to include it on my list (and at £5/ticket it isn't extravagant).

"Love Sarah" was much as expected. But it is nice to see a film with and about three women.

As with many films I chose, a world away from Hollywood, thank goodness.

We are having an inhouse  Woody Allen season . Netflix has lots , and an especial delight was Midnight In Paris . Young arty American , on holiday in the city ,  with bitchy fiancee  and her parents from  hell , finds himself in 1920s  Paris. He falls in with the literary and arty set - Picasso, Matisse , Dali ,  Hemingway, Gertrude Stein et al  , all of whom are caricatured exquisitely . Very funny - a lovely film

John, there is huge enjoyment to be had in creating one's own film season. I'm with you on this.

I suggest a season of Stephen Frears films would be interesting or of films with Cate Blanchett. Although an homage to Alan Parker might be appropriate.

Meanwhile I have booked for "Portrait of a Lady on Fire" and "Hope Gap" during September.

Is no one else going to the cinema at the moment?

I went to "Hope Gap" last night.  Emotional stuff. Annette Bening and Josh O'Connor are brilliant, Writing is tight and controlled.  The visuals reinforce the feelings even down to tarmac roads vs unmade surfaces.

It is about the breakdown of a marriage and the emotions around this.  These are similar to experiencing the death of the one you love.

Went to the cinema for the first time since lockdown on Monday. It was really quiet and I cannot imagine how the companies can be making a profit, but it was good to watch a big screen with proper sound again.

The movie was Bill & Ted Face the Music. It won't win any Oscars but was enjoyable, not quite as good as the original two movies but still fun. There is an end of credits scene, not that our kids allow us to leave before the credits finish anyway as they have seen too many Marvel movies to risk leaving early.

The big multiplexes work on low occupancy rates during the week, historically relying on Friday and Saturday nights for their margin, together with edible sales, on which the margin is high.  If the quiet nights or afternoons become busier, they may be able to cope with lower attendances at the weekends.

Their staffing costs are minimal. There are no longer projectionists and few FOH staff.  The building, fittings and technical equipment, all fixed, are the hard bit.

Not at the cinema but Enola Homes on Netflix was good fun, Millie Bobby Brown was excellent as usual.

Rob, certainly include made for TV films.

With the news that Cineworld is mothballing its facilities, many will be stuck for cinemas to visit. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-54407213

I know I fortunate in having an independent cinema in the town which has operated a diverse repertoire programne since reopening.
