But I've no idea how to assess the size of that market

surely its virtually Zero, in the UK anyway, as very few electric cars are homologated for towing , maybe a couple of Teslas, the I-pace and an Audi, all of which have decent ranges already

Top Gear test the Volkswagen ID-R on BBC2 tonight at 7pm

Looks a bit nippy.

It's only just occurred to me... does "ID" in German sound like idee (meaning idea)?

Worth watching?

Yes, definitely, but just that section of the program. I was lucky to catch the start of the item just after finishing the washing up, then turned off afterwards.

Obviously a one-off test bed but manic performance equal to, or better than, an F1 car. A range of only 12 miles so not very practical for going on holiday ;-)

It shows what can be done though.

Is it showing the right thing? Is a powerful electric motor so very difficult to create or package into a car?

Surely the engineers should be concentrating on efficiencies in the drive train, in the regenerative system to improve range, in clever physical design work to combine light weight with adequate strength.

Stephen, agreed. Having seen the program, I imagine there is a lot more to the machine than fitting a powerful electric motor. I'm sure they must have been focussed on efficiencies in the drive train, regen systems, light weight etc.

Not sure what the overall weight is, that would be interesting, but it certainly handled well.

Good to see an extreme  electrically machine handling so well against more traditional hardware.

Confess I might find the whining noises addictive, a bit like a straight cut gearbox.

P.S. I guess the limited 12 mile range is there to get battery weight down.

Steve W.  I realise, as you do, that selling acceleration is sexy and range less so.

The irony is that it is range about which every opponent focuses upon.

Of course, full torque from the start is useful, in snow for example, or for hauling loads as well as acceleration.
