Can we talk about ( Broken ) Garage Doors?

My up and over garage door failed today, leaving my 7s marooned the wrong side of the door!.  The failure is on the top rail which carries the big spring, it has sheared in the corner which carries the small spring for the rhs runner.  To allow me to get the 7s out I feel a job for Messrs Bodget and Fixit coming on. The problem I have is that the lhs runner is still connected to the main spring and when I try and open the door, it skews and the lhs mechanism fouls a rainwater down pipe.

The question is if I disconnect the spring on the rhs will I be able to raise the door without it skewing off to one side?  I know it's how long is a piece of string, but hoped someone else knows more than I.

Every problem has a silver lining, as this will ensure my wife gets the new door she wants' which will include a personal door.

Photos, please.

Might it be possible to add a reinforcing brace between the loose bit and somewhere on the main part of the door?

I'm sorry to hear that Alan. I must have been lucky when one of the wires failed, as I was able to open the door.

The replacement is a roller door and considerably superior.

I assume you have tried pushing the damn thing in at the top as much as you have tried pulling it at the bottom.

Bit diff but when we bought the house we are in the estate agent says you will like the big double detached garage ,,just had roof lifted retiled to give space for mezzanine floor ,,,plus new electric double up and over door ,,fully insulated ,only fitted one month ago

great says I ,but what happens if the electric trips how do you open the door ,,,he says no problem there sir ( bloody estate agents ) if you look here there is a rope and handle if it is pulled it will release the chain ,so door can be opened manually ,,from inside as there is no outside handle ,,,

magic says I ,but what happens if door is closed and electric trip goes ,he says I just said you just pull the rope handle ,,if the door is shut how do you get in ,,he says you have to switch the electric trip back on ,,,,,how it's inside the garage ? ,well then,,,he was stumped ,cos no windows or outside door ,

one of first things we did was put a door in side wall ,,I have electrically connected thousands of door ,and once a door tripped ,,we had to take roof tiles of cut felt to get in

please note ,,,,this does not apply to Australian estate agents ,,who would have nown all the asweres

cheers for the wine Bruce

derek

Derek, my electric garage door has a manual override, operatable from the outside for those times when the power fails (behind a lock).

Not sure about your specific door - but when I installed mine it had lots of warnings regarding the tension/compression energy that was stored in the springs, so if you do unhook anything watch out for any recoil.

WRT a new door with a personal door - I believe they are called a Wicket door and they are very useful.

Good idea Stephen  ,but on this garage door there is nothing ,so if electric had failed and you were outside ,tough ,like I said first job was fitting side door

Ps it's an Australian door

Thanks Guys, and JonL, I've been looking at the springs with HSE in mind, lol, either way the doors got to be opened, I have an MOT booked for the 9th!.  I'll maybe offer the solution to the problem as an 'inducement' to the Company that's quotng for the new doors...

"Ps it's an Australian door"

You're having us on Derek. There is no truth to the rumour that everything in Australia is upside down. Unless you're pissed.

Without the spring you'll be unlikely to open the door ?
