Meanwhile in another world Toby Young moves on from saving us from the EU to save our social lives from Covid.

Have we already gone past "peak mask"? Seems only 50% bothering in garage/newsagent today (Surrey). Not good.

I think R is now at 0.2, which is good (about time too) but that is in large part because people are wearing masks in public indoor spaces.

How far do you need to travel?

a postcode search of the government's coronavirus test booking service reveals:

People with symptoms living in London are being directed between 50 and 135 miles away, including to testing sites in Cardiff and the Isle of Wight

A postcode in Devon was directed to a testing centre 109 miles away in Carmarthen

One in Worthing was directed 40 miles away

One in Cumbria was sent 50 miles away to Dumfries In Sheffield on Wednesday morning the closest available testing centre was 20 miles away

P.S. Devon is not 109 miles from Carmarthen (unless you fly directly).

Things are improving if people are only being sent 50 to 100 miles away. When care home staff were finally offered tests, staff at a home in Margate were given a choice between traveling to test centres in Essex or Southampton (140 miles). Nigh on impossible for those without cars. Rather expensive for those with cars.

Still as we were told in March "Test, test, test doesn't apply to UK because we have such a wonderful public health system". The author of that gem is yet to be sacked.

UK's tests per 1M population and a few other countries below the UK.  There aren't many countries with large populations testing significantly more than the UK.  Most are a long way behind.

Country,   Tests/1M pop

UK              239,494

Spain         196,979

Ireland       172,218

New Zealand 157,550

Germany     147,714

Austria         135,575

Switzerland  121,705

France          114,856

That is wonderful as a gross number of tests. (we have to assume that all countries are testing front line staff such NHS staff or undertakers repeatedly) If we don't test, we don't know what is happening.

Here is the comparative data in graphical form.  https://www.statista.com/statistics/1104645/covid19-testing-rate-select-countries-worldwide/
Here is UK civil service data on testing. https://coronavirus.data.gov.uk/testing

Deaths are significantly down, in a declining exponential curve but because there was so little testing for months, we don't know what the underlying infection rate was.

Again in graphical form, this time from UK civil service. https://coronavirus.data.gov.uk/deaths

There is a relationship between how many people are being tested and how many people need to be tested. It is good that testing capacity has increased so much since the start of this, however, there is a reason it is so much higher than some other countries.....

FWIW, I just checked ours and it is 255,631 per million.
our spike of positive cases all comes from state gov gross incompetence at hotel quarantine and aged care. That just makes us pariahs in our own country as the rest of the states are well under control, but scared to reopen borders.
We hope to fly internationally in qtr 1 or 2 next year.
