Just watching the news.  So screening at airports is useless if they are just doing a heat sensitive camera check as that will only capture people in the later stage of contamination.  If lab tests take a day then that is a big build up of people at the airport.

Derek  you raise a good point.  I did a quick search to see if the FCO has responsibility for British Citizens in this tricky position.

I found this in the FCO website defining thier responsibilities.which is search for

Consular and crisis (FCO foreign policy priority outcome 1)
1.1 Assist British people living, travelling and working around the world:

  • stand up for British Citizens overseas by providing high quality, accessible consular services globally, focused on those most in need
  • reduce preventable incidents affecting British people overseas through collaboration with partners and governments
  • respond rapidly to all overseas crises, leading cross-government action

So it does not explicitly say they have a duty to repatriate people but the FCO does have a duty to respond and support.

I agree that it is bit crass to complain about inaction when it is clearly not a simple challenge to get into a quarantined region in a foreign country and extract your citizens.

If they bring a plane load back to uk ,,you have to think of health risks of ,,flight crew and all on board in confined space plus all crew who check them in and transfer to isolation housing and ones who look after them when they return to uk ,, , sounds tough or selfish or cruel however you want to put it , but they went there on there own accord ,, and now want bailing out

Arrows Park, that my folks and my childhood local hospital! How can any hospital, in the middle of winter, have room for 200 people for 2 weeks? Are they using non hospital facilities like nurses accommodation or something?

There are about 600 dual citizens of China/Aus in the province. Our govt is trying to get permission to get them out * but one hurdle is that many entered China on their Chinese passport so That govt says it is their decision how to deal with their citizens. Interesting legal/humanitarian/ political football match being played with people's lives.

* if they are able to leave on QANTAS planes, they will be flown to Christmas island to a new facility which was built short time ago to house refugees. Given there is only one family there, plenty of room and facilities to house them for the 14 day incubation period. While it wouldn't be a picnic, it would seem a small price to pay to be safe.

amazing speed of construction with two hospitals being erected. On Feb 3 1,000 bed facility opens.  On Feb 5 a 1300 bed facility opens. FROM SCRATCH. Apparently Chinese government is live streaming the building process.

I see lots of discussion about effectiveness of masks

when the virus leaves the body in a sneeze etc how long does it survive on a surface or the skin?
