Quoting Red SLR: Google cars have now done 700,000 miles in auto mode. 2 crashes, one in manual mode - the other rear ended when it was sat at a red traffic light. Zero crashes in auto mode.Google driverless cars, Road testing, from WikipediaQuoting ChrisC: I find it difficult to believe a driverless car is a real option when a modern sat nav gets lost in the real world, and that technology has been around more than fifteen years now.? GPS is only one input to the driverless cars, they also rely on cameras and distance sensors. Together with a much more detailed level of mapping than is available in your typical satnav device, it enables the car to figure out where it is much more accurately, and deal with obstacles in the way. I did hear that Google had only mapped an area within 15 miles of their HQ to a sufficient level of detail, so I'm surprised to read that that it went over the Golden Gate Bridge and around Tahoe. But I suppose they could have mapped those extra routes as well. The detailed mapping is the big issue at the moment - if Google have really only managed to map some 700 square miles of Northern California, it's going to be a long time before we can use one to drive from London to Anglesey.

Google use laser 3d modelling plus loads of other sensors IIRC. The good thing is, the more cars drive the further the model goes. No shocker they are sticking to silicone valley, lots of rich people there who will pay $$$$$$!!!

Roger , fancy you peddling the myth of road tax \" class=\"smiley\" /> I think there are a lot of cars on the road without drivers already \" class=\"smiley\" />

Just imagine what Blatchat could be like in 30 years when nearly everyone is 'riding' in driverless cars. Being optimistic we could be a refuge for those people who hate driverless vehicles, but we could also be a dying breed as the world moves on Time will tell.

I'd quite like a driverless car for quite a few of my trips...and I'd absolutely like to drive on others.
