Foxton Locks
Had an interesting visit to Foxton Locks today. All ten locks are currently drained for replacement of five sets of lock gates and sediment removal. This weekend the Canal and Rivers Trust were allowing people to go down into the bottom of the lock chambers. I'm sure one day the kids will look back with fondness at being dragged out in the cold to climb down a smelly hole in the ground!! Regards Ian

The Canal & River Trust recently did something similar at Castlefield in Manchester - they put metal walkways along the bottom of the canal and for on weekend in the middle of the works opened up for public access.

It was fascinating (and very cold - we arrived in a blizzard) - even my two teenage girls claimed to have had a good time although that may have referred to the stone painting they did.

This is a regular thing that CRT are doing when replacing lock gates during the winter maintenance periods. Last year when there was an open day at Marple locks, over 1200 people went down into one of the locks which had been drained for the replacement of the lock gates. There were several other events going on at the same time all to promote the canals as a great recreation facility for walkers, cyclists, nature lovers, etc. and to recruit more volunteers!

Isn't human-sized technology fun?

From 15/2 to 9/3 Foxton Locks will be drained again for maintenance (lock gates, brickwork and ladders) with lots of events planned.

It surprises me than the inclined plane is, comparatively, a failure in technology.  I visited the Hay Inclined Plane when at Ironbridge.

It was abandoned a long time ago as was the whole of the Shropshire Canal.
