Gary Lineker and his pay from the BBC
I see Gary Lineker was paid £1.75 million last year and is the highest paid "employee" (with Zoe Ball 2nd at £1.43 mill). Stupid amounts of money and part if the reason the BBC is struggling. It's time the licence was done away with and the BBC made into a "commercial" organisation, so people like me that aren't into football don't feel like we're being ripped off. As for Zoe Ball. Dont get me started.... Discuss.

Some news reports claim these individuals  could earn equal amounts in the commercial sector and the BBC are simply paying the 'going rate'.

Is this the pay they will "admit" to ? Does it include pay from independent production companies that sell the program complete to the Beeb. Lots of so called stars don't appear on the list since they get their pay thro' these companies that in some cases they own.

Ian  - why does the BBC have to pay the going rate?  I'm sure there must be other ex- professionals ,more  recent & hence up to date than Lineker, who are "cheaper" & can deliver just as much banal information whilst sitting on their "a**e" for 60 minutes a week. If he can go off & get more money elsewhere good for him! but not from the license fee paying public.

Rant over - should have kicked him harder when I played against him when he was a youth.

He has a rare skill, there are many ex footballers who have tried to do TV work hardly any succeed. There is a market and he gets paid according to that.

If you look at viewer / listener numbers, then they both have the top rated shows on the BBC on TV and Radio respectively, so would be expected to be the top wage earners. With Zoe Ball and her 8 million or so listeners per day, are they happy to contribute 18p of their Licence Fee per year to listen to her for 3 hours every weekday?

Seems the 1.75 was last years pay and this year Lineker has taken a 23% cut.

In and of itself a good reason for reforming the way the BBC is funded. Let them go commercial and let those who wish to pay for it, pay for it.

its just one example of profligate spending of public funds that’s unaffordable, IMO.

Ps, Sky might put their prices up Derek, but you don’t need to pay them.
