Hi Martin B2, welcome to the forum. Very pleased to find another caterham & gyro enthusiast - always thought the two went together rather well. I'l learning with Kai Maurer out of Rochester, got approx 20 hours logged. Starting to find the basic flying a bit easier now so I can concentrate a bit more on the radio and navigation. Still reckon I need a new brain though ! Where do you fly from? Nigel

I forgot to mention that on last weekends lesson we practiced 'engine failure after take-off' (simulation only of course) that was fun. Every now and then Phil would just shut the throttle and say "where are you going to land then Steve, landing isn't optional now", so I was approaching empty fields, fields full of sheep or straw bales, densely wooded areas, the sea etc as if I had to make an emergency landing! Not much thinking time when you do this from 300' - 500'. At first I found it hard to push the nose down when I was quite low and slow, but you need to in order to maintain flight! Alex - I am told to expect first solo between 15 and 20 hours. I think I could manage a circuit by myself now but I'd be very nervous (so I'm not ready for it), the take off, climbing, turning, setting up for landing and landing I can manage (I think) - it is maintaining a good lookout, managing radio, BUMFICHH checks etc that seem to make me feel like it is too busy. It can be very busy in the circuit, plus we share the airfield with a busy gliding school and have some noise abatement areas to fly between so there is lots to look out for. If I concentrate too much on the checks then I can gain or lose a couple of hundred feet without realising. In September I've booked in for the '9 exams in 5 days' course at The Great Circle in Heathrow, it will be nice to get the exams out of the way.

Ahh, the heady smell of avgas \" class=\"smiley\" /> I did my ppl in four weeks straight, back in the glorious summer of '93 courtesy of a flying scholarship. Then I learned to fly properly with the RAF through university I am very glad I didn't have a gopro in the cockpit when I went solo (8hrs). For reasons that still escape me to this day, Jingle Bells was shouted (not sung you understand), shouted, on repeat, the entire length of the circuit. Flying I always found relatively straightforward, it was the RT that flummoxed me. That and overhead rejoins for some reason. Also I was on Yorkshire UAS from '94 to '97 so I think we're the same age. Did you join up at all post UAS?

Also interesting points earlier in the thread on landing from Mike and Michael about elephants on skateboards etc. I was simply told to flare when you see the horizon around your ears. Which sounds really odd, but makes perfect sense when you're doing it. Honest \" class=\"smiley\" />

Ha, I was a NUAS Ranger \" class=\"smiley\" /> Scholarship was at Teesside, flew out of RAF Leeming thro uni. Sadly I wasn't quite (read nowhere near) good enough to make the cut of three(?) pilots the RAF took that year. A friend was however and he ended up being RED 1 a few years back that wasn't really annoying at all...\" class=\"smiley\" /> Did you join yourself?

Ah NUAS, I seem to remember the rivalry with YUAS was fierce and very unforgiving I did join up yes in early 1998 and after a brief stint flying helicopters, I went to the C-130 Hercules and I've been flying and instructing on them ever since (currently on the C-130J at Brize).

I completed my 6th hour today....Juan, my instructor, pushed me really hard today, but it felt much better than my last lesson. I have another booked next week and really feel as though I am starting to make progress. It still feels like a very long, but enjoyable, journey lies ahead. Steve, sounds like you are making fantastic progress mate....do keep me updated! For anyone thinking about it, just give it a go. It is one of those experiences that so few have, but everyone should! I am finding it so addictive and such a fantastic mental challenge!
