Hartside Cafe
It has been reported on the BBC that the property has been bought by a property developer and will be rebuilt as a 'cult' cafe. S.

Thought it was a bit of a cult cafe before it burnt down anyway. But seriously brown sauce looks like s**t tastes like s**t tomato sauce (Heinz) every time!

Average cafe in extraordinary location . Food standard fare, and well out of step with current trends . The sort of place some of the clientele would let your tyres down if you asked for avocado and poached egg  on sourdough . To which I am partial- I must be turning into what the Mail would term a snowflake millenial

Sorry, don't know what a 'cult cafe' is. It is how the BBC reported it. The report referred the the cafe being popular with bikers and cyclist because of its views of the Lake District and North Pennines. The plans to knock down the fire ravaged cafe and build a new "Mecca for petrol-heads" had been revealed. The report is on BBC teletext news and there is an article on the BBC website. I have never been there myself, but had heard of it on BC. S

Food wise it was never very good but survived on it's location much better fare down the hill in Melmerby or Whitfield. Also the place was closed 3 months of the year as the A686 is very quiet after the tourist season is over. A group of local investors talked about it but they couldn't get the figures to add up, £300k for the site and say another £500k for the rebuild that's a lot of bacon sandwiches.

As a local my only worry is that increased motor cycle usage will lead to averaging cameras on the hill similar to the Cat and Fiddle.
