Helmet Fitment Advice

Hi everyone,

In the process of trying to buy a helmet and I feel that I'm stuck between two sizes.

The medium passes OMPs "should not move by more than 20°" test, but it doesn't feel right. It feels like the internal padding is pressing a little bit on my head. I.e. it's not just in contact with my head, but is actually pressing into it slightly. There's not a huge amount of pressure but it's there. It's a consistent pressure however around my entire head, and it doesn't feel uncomfortable per se, but on the other hand it's also not comfortable.

The large feels comfortable, my head is in contact with the padding, but there is no pressure, but it fails the 20° test miserably.

I've uploaded two videos here that might help.

Medium

Large

I'm currently sat here with the medium on and plan to keep it on for the next hour or so just to see if I get used to it, but I have to say it doesn't feel "right". Albeit, with no experience who am I to say what right is.

Different manufacturers make slightly different shaped helmets. You might be a medium, but not an OMP.

I agree with Jon. I went to Demon Tweeks and tried a number of different makes before I found i had a 'Bell' shaped head.

Thank you both. I'm starting to realise I live in the wrong part of the UK to have an interest in motorsport. Every helmet dealer I can find is an hour and a half away at least! I may put a further order in to Demon Tweeks for a Bell and. Simpson helmet and see if I have further success. Hopefully they're okay with me having four helmets on order with the intention of returning three of them!

Although it's a bit laboured this video does explain helmet fitment in detail and why size isn't everything Paperbag https://youtu.be/TT16MHFsLeA

Thanks Benton. Have watched a fair view videos but non that are 40 minutes long. Maybe that's what I need so will give that a watch later, in the mean time I've put an order in to Demon Tweeks for a Simpson and Bell lid to see if either fit better than OMP.

Something else to consider is wearing a balaclava as apart from the safety aspect it also keeps the interior clean. My Bell Sport is a little loose without a balaclava but fits perfectly with one.

Thanks, I'm not racing (not for now anyway) only track days. So hadn't considered a balaclava but if that's fairly common then maybe I'll get one ordered.

Thank you again everyone. The Bell and Simpson helmet arrived today and the Bell is spot on. Nice and snug but not tight. It's the most "boring" one of the lot I tried, which is slightly disappointing, but not really a factor at the end of the day.
