At least one fish and chip run.....

Minor gaff at the chip shop this evening when I asked the proprietor if he was South African no I'm Rhodesian says he! Better not mention Zimbabwe then.

I see you have received lots of looks but no replies apart from yours truly.  You have two problems, firstly no one understood the humour and secondly you are norf of Watford mate and although you are well within social distancing ... you aint souf like ... no wot I mean?

Asking someone where they come from can be tricky to ask.  It can be loaded with subtext.  If I ask it is purely out of interest in the individual and their back story.  You may well have got some of the back story in their response and the words they used.

Stephen my local DPD driver is Afrikaans who told me he departed from SA as it was getting dangerous in the country areas. Do citizens of former colonies still have some passport rights here?

Sometimes I wonder the reverse ., Can I reclaim ,my Australian /Scottish heritage ? In other words , can I exchange a Boris for a Nicoia ?

Stephen's right  - for all the reasons we don't need to remind ourself (nah, mate, where you really from like ?) but if  I hear an interesting accent , UK or foreign , I'm always curious . I get a perverse pleasure from identifying Canadian and New Zealand accents and asking the speakers how often they are mistaken for US or Aus citizens. I love the lesser known English regional accents too -  N Lincs , E Riding  ,rural Northants etc

I've crossed the US/Canadian border several times usually from Montana/Idaho into Canada and the accents seem to change within a few miles as they do on the Scottish border. Certainly an easing of tension when you cross the border the Canadian immigration folk always happy to chat once the paperwork is sorted unlike their less cheery US neighbours.

Accents from nearby are often simple to distinguish, west Somerset from north Somerset, that from Bristol.

Further afield it becomes more difficult and broader brush, the separate accents on each side of the Pennines is easy, but variations within Yorkshire might be much harder to identify for me.
