Looking to buy my first Caterham

Morning everyone

New member here, which was a lovely present from my wife.

I've always loved Caterhams but only got my first passenger ride last year, I still haven't driven one! I have never been in a position to own one until now, but recent circumstances have led me to change my mindset a little bit and I'm starting to think I should just get on with it!

I'd always dreamed of building one, but with the disappearance of the 160, and no replacement "cheap " kit available, I'm now on the hunt for a built car. I intend to get to an area meeting shortly, YW&P7, to have a chat and hopefully look over a few cars, but in the interim I wondered if I could appeal to the membership to keep their ears to the ground for me?

Ive generally been looking at K series cars, tunnel handbrake, de Dion. I'm not planning any track time, it's likely to be a weekend and touring machine so I'd be happy with a 5 speed box I think. I'm reasonably mechanical minded, and have a garage and  a decent set of tools, so I'm looking forward to tinkering as much as driving!

Here's the important bit. I only have a max 13k budget. I know it's not a lot, but it's not likely to increase so I'll have to make do. I know it's not insurmountable, as I've seen cars advertised over the last few months which fit the bill, but I've missed out on them, and I appreciate my budget will preclude buying from a dealer generally speaking.

If anyone hears of anything coming up, knows someone who is thinking of selling something suitable etc I'd be grateful if you could give them a nudge my way? I'm in N Yorkshire, western side near Skipton.

Many thanks

Adrian

Welcome Adrian.

Going to meetings will help you make a decision, so you are making a good call there.

When I bought my Seven in 1998, I was buying right at the bottom of the price range and was still utterly delighted with my choice, so much so that I still have the very same car. I hope you find something to suit you both.

Thanks everyone for the welcome, and your input.

I had seen the white car actually online, it's a long way from me (most places seem to be in the Caterham world!) so maybe I'll pluck up the courage to go down there for a look.

It seems that generally the difference between dealer price and private sale for the same car is about a 2k mark up - there's a red one for sale in the north west which was previously on eBay for 2k less in Norfolk on Ebay from a private seller - does that seem about right for a dealer margin? Hence my looking for a private car- I hadn't concerned myself with warranty etc as it seems that many owners are true enthusiasts who are very mechanically competent.

Welcome to the club. You have the right idea about attending the local area meet. Buying a Caterham is a very different prospect from purchasing a normal car, and a few hours listening to a variety of current owners will give you a sound understanding of what to look out for and what to pay. Good luck and hope to see you on a Blat in 2020.
