Hmm tricky topic

My son works in this field.

When people ask what has he worked on I usually answer:

If you are watching an advert on TV and have no idea what they are selling then that's my boys work

typical example the Orangutan on the Scotish Power ad - By the way NO animals were used in that ad

This thread reminds me of the 'e' series of books by Matt Beaumont. If you haven't read them they are an extremley light-hearted and funny view of advertising agencies. Each book tells its story via e-mails between staff... Rofl

Dont watch adverts. We record everything, even BBC, and watch when we want to.

We also cut hour long programs down to 35mins by winding on at those annoying adverts. Five minutes of the same dross every fifteen minutes; no thank you.

Much better.

This year's female scent/ male hopefulness-guilt-apology advertisements:

  • Charlize Theron's current for J'adore Dior is way below the original with the dropping jewelery. The one with the stars of the past was quite clever.
  • The Chloé ad is awful.
  • But the Gisele Bündchen/ Baz Luhrmann/ Chanel No 5 is brilliant: interview with Luhrmann in Vanity Fair.

PS: The music for the Citröen Cactus don't do anything at all.

PPS: I'd assumed the Characters ad was supposed to grate, and thereby become memorable and effective.

JK, agreed, it's a shame they don't show the full length version again, I'm sure it's on YouTube. Like a movie script in 4 minutes

The Citroen Cactus Ad is Jefferson Airplane - White Rabbit, given the psychedelia connections of the song/band/era are Citroen trying to say the designers were on acid when it was penned... certainly looks like it to me.

"Do the shake'n vac, put the freshness back..."

Scarred me for life, but still is one of the adverts with the best recall and for what it was selling.
