New/old grill question. Photos added page 3

I've read about the new Super Seven 1600 and I really like the way it looks from the front. I've always quite liked the clams, but I decided it wasn't those that made the difference for me. I think it is the way they have reverted to the old style grill found on Lotus and earlier Caterham Sevens.

I've had a look at the parts department, and the new grill isn't shown, and other grills seem rather expensive for what you get.

So, I would be grateful if a member with an older Seven could tell me what diameter wire the old grills were made from. I thought as I have time on my hands, that I would try making one for my Roadsport Smile

Thanks

Duncan

Just measured my old grille ('98 vintage) as 3.7-3.8mm dia.

Thanks very much Ezzer, that's brilliant Smile My guess would have been an 1/8" so 3.2mm, but that is quite a lot thicker. Duncan

I measured it in several places but as far as I can see, 3.7-3.8mm doesn't relate to any particular wire gauge or size I can find so who knows where it comes from.

It is an odd size, but I'll try 4mm as the closest option I think.

I agree, that grille looks far better. I removed the 7 logo panel from the grille which is an improvement (I hate branding on products and I usually try to remove as much as possible on most things!). All IMO of course...

On my Seven, I painted the 7 black and kept it behind the mesh as required by IVA so it's hard to spot.

I've been studying lots of photos and I noticed they all had 7 horizontal bars. It's a nice touch like the way S3 Sevens have 7 screen studs Smile

I preferred the traditional grille and kept it on my '98 Crossflow until it would not fit in the new nose cone.

Along similar lines:- It annoys me the way so many look-vaguely-similar cars sport one of the Caterham "7" grilles. It shows how Grumpy Rage they are about the real thing. (Or is it homage?)

Thanks David, I'm going to use stainless wire so it shouldn't need any paint. My aim is to end up with wire of a similar diameter to grill size ratio so hopefully 4mm will look similar Smile
