PAYG mobile phone SIM ... a warning
If you are looking for a PAYG SIM for an elderly friend ... I suggest you may want to avoid O2. Bought a SIM card. Added £10 to it. £5 was immediately converted to a bundle with free calls and texts with a validity of 30 days only. If you then top it up with another £10, they will do the same again. Called O2 to say bundle not required, as for occasional emergency use phone calls only ... to be told they can remove the bundle tariff, but then you would pay 35p per minute for phone calls and £1/day for having the phone. Going to use it for a month and then switch to '3' who offer a much friendlier SIM only PAYG where any top up lasts indefinitely and can be used for calls at 3p per minute. Thank you to 3 Shame on you O2

The 321 SIM from Three does not expire.

I switched to using a company phone almost all of the time a few years back. Purchased a 321 SIm to keep my original number active and have not yet needed to top it up, though you obviously need to turn data off. I don't think my father has needed to top up the one I got for him either, he has certainly never asked how to top it up Wink

A lot have expiry dates on credit too. I have a cheap Nokia PAYG as an emergency phone via Tesco which maintains its balance till it runs out. I did get it a few years ago so not sure if 'conditions' are the same now. I try and send a text each month so it doesnt look dormant.

This is the same reason we dont buy store gift cards for anyone - they expire / diminish if not used.

Ian - it's funny you say that. I selected O2 about 6 months ago precisely because they offered a PAYG tariff without expiry dates. Their 'Classic PAYG' allows you to top up £10 and spend it at your leisure (currently 6 months for my son and he still has £4 left). Not sure why they would want to charge you £1/d for the phone.

I discovered similar issues when my sister and I persuaded our parents to carry a handset (this was a dozen years ago). We chose and bought it and provided the calls credit.

This was one issue, the other was that they put it in the car glove box and left it. When needed the battery was flat.

JonL ... O2 say the old fashioned top up plan has now been discontinued. Their SIM now in the bin and a 3 SIM fitted and easily topped up ... for occasional calls only.

We set up the outlaws phones with GiffGaff.  They cost £6 a month each and GG don't mess you about.  No contract, monthly account that you can cancel/upgrade/downgrade at any time.  Highly recommended.  Thumb Up

Any recommendations for a data only PAYG SIM for my new tintop? I have no real clue how much data I will use (audio streaming, and map data, not commuting)

I need to avoid using my company phone for non company data...

Three have some pretty good rates for masses of data each month.
