Photo driving licence ...

I don’t know if this has been done before, however ...

As a help to all on Blatchat, remember photo driving licences only last ten years before they need renewing ... big fine if you don't

So ... knowing my licence needed renewing mid August ‘20 I went online to complete the formality ...

the online system didn’t recognise my details - I thoroughly checked inputs all corrected but not accepted

Attempted to call only to receive a message saying they were busy and directed me to the online system!

I tried their web chat, only to be told due to ‘covid’ it was not operational

... eventually after many tries I joined their phone queue and thinking ahead I fired up their website and completed the form ... guess what? ... details accepted this time so put the phone down ... the final part of the renewal, other than paying!, was to complete a satisfaction survey ...

Now to the real point of the post - the new driving licence uses the photo from your passport (assuming you have one) ... my passport is due for renewal next year so is nine years out of date, thus I’ve paid £14 to renew my driving licence with a photo which is only one year older than the current licence! ... it does feel like bureaucracy ... perhaps if I’d posting this tomorrow on Yorkshire Day it could have been the Friday Argument

Useful reminder.

I had to check mine and I am OK until January 2024.

This is why I still have the paper licence, if I had swapped when the photo ones came out, I figured out I would have had to renew twice before my paper one expires! Duncan

I tried to renew my photo licence without much hope, very frustrating  and I didn't receive a renewal notice. Found this press release dated on 4th. June 2020  on the gov.uk Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency.

"Drivers granted 7 month photocard licence extension

The extension applies to drivers with a photocard driving licence due to expire between 1 February and 31 August 2020."

https://www.gov.uk/government/news/drivers-granted-7-month-photocard-licence-extension

I regret opting for the photo licence and wish I had stuck to the paper one.

Interestingly my wife lostd her license so tried to apply for a new photo card type. She previously only had the old paper type. Went round in circles trying to get their website to work, then tried calling and got nowhere. Tried again the following day and it worked first time! License arrived within five days. Agree about old photo from passport being used. Made us smile though!

Still have only my paper license but if you happen to move you haven't a choice, you have to move to the newer type unfortunately.

A friend of my wife's flew from Aberdeen to Stavanger 10 days ago to see her husband who is working there. On arriving in Norway she was pulled aside as her passport stated that it was issued in Eritrea and she was resident in Panama. After mutch discussion and producing a photo driving licence she was allowed in. The passport had been renewed in the UK a year ago in April and hadn't been used. All the details that could be seen looked correct but obviously no way to check what was on the chip. British Consulate in Oslo and Passport Office were extremely unhelpful and wanted her to fly there, at a cost of several hundred pounds and pay for an emergency passport. It was only with the intervention of her MP that they reluctantly couriered  an emergency replacement, all at her own expense which arrived two hours before her return flight. Holiday obviously ruined with worry and phone calls.
She is still trying to find out what caused this and to get re-imbursed.

Just celebrated 34 years in our house and have retained the old paper licence - but if I had a £1 for every time someone has said 'that's illegal, you must have a photo one' I'd probably be on my 2nd house by now.
