Scam/phishing text supposedly from DVLA

Not sure if it's been flagged previously on here and I'd like to think we are all savvy when it comes to this sort of thing but might be worth passing on the friends and family less so.

Youngest son, who doesn't own a car received a test today supposedly from DVLA informing him he was due a vehicle tax refund with a link to a web address which started "gov.uk" but then continued with a dash and other text which included dvla.

He realised it was a scam so blocked the number but sent me a screen shot. As I work for a government department I know any official uk government web address will be followed by "/" after gov.uk. I reported it to DVLA as there is nothing on their part of gov.uk to warn people of these scams. The guy said they are fully aware of this scam and inform the public of such stuff by social media - I suggested that not everyone follows social media so it may be worth flagging up on their web pages as well.

Well spotted. I hope the government can track them down.

One of the latest e mail scams is supposedly from TV Licensing but the address & subject matter gives it away.

The area I think needs legislation to stop, is the ability of the scum bags to artificially insert a false, but real phone number so when they call you, it looks like your bank is trying to contact you (if you have the number in your contacts list)

Yes. it causes a lot of distress in addition to any financial loss. I tried to find something authoritative on solutions following a previous discussion but AFAIR the only outcome was a demonstration of my misunderstanding of caller identification.

As far as legislation goes, we can only legislate against this if it originates from within the EU, or UK as it will be shortly. If it originates from further afield, as they usual do, there's isn't anything that can be done.

I think we should look at this and understand that the people of the UK are never misled and any decision they make should be respected regardless of how they were persuaded into making it Wink

Doug - A fair point that people make decisions based on their ability to do so & with the best possible intention for the outcome.

There is a saying that protecting people from their own stupididty is an endless task..........not forgetting that to err is to be human.

It has been a very longstanding problem with fishing licences from the Environment Agency  . They used to be available, when I was a kid, from any tackle shop   , then from something called Post Offices (what happened to them ? ) but now it's online from the EA website . It works well , but every year there are tales of scamming bast**rds who rip off decent people .

I am not sure it's fair to dismiss it as stupidity -not everyone is IT savvy , not everyone even has access to a PC or owns a smartphone . And accessing the site online from a library PC isn't without stress for some older people
