Search facility
I know there have been plenty of comments about the "search" function but why has this not been fixed. Is this something that we as a club have paid an outside company to set up for us? Many thanks to those people that give up their spare time to help run the club but life would be easier if we could get this fixed? Regards Paul.

I have no insights that address Paul's question.

But in case anyone hasn't found it already the best workaround that I know is to use external search with site restriction as in the second link in my Signature below.

You can do this in two steps :-

In the search box type

    Google search

on the left hand side under ‘filter by content type’  select ‘page (2)’

Select either of the search results and then you can do a google search on the website

(Shaun has implemented this, but I can never find it , so this is how I do it. Similarly, I can never remember JK’s direct incantation)

Why this isn’t now the default search, I don’t know.

It's certainly possible (at least in most cases) to use an external search. I am, however, very frustrated with the lack of response except from "it works well, it's just because you need to use it differently"-ish comments.

It is clearly not acceptable that the search is dysfunctional and that formating posts doesn't work - it's more than five years now.

I also gather that some of the managing functions don't work either - and that Facebook is used by the club as a substitute.

C'mon... We've paid a fortune for this forum and it does /not/ work well.

The site search works well as long as you use an uppercase AND between two or three words to stop it bringing back irrelevant stuff. Try it with something like 'ride AND height' compared to just 'ride height'.

..........and unless you know these requirements its useless....

a effective search facility should not require these,

Exactly.

Why different from any other search engine?

I'm not sure it is, unless you're comparing to Google or similar.  Whatever product the site search uses defaults to 'OR' behavior, e.g. you stick in a lit of words and it will bring back results that contain any of them.  Sometimes that's what you'll want but not always and that's why it lets you be specific and specify AND.  It may be possible to change the product config so it defaults to 'AND' but for me it's not a great hardship to set it myself when searching.

Not quite sure what's come over me tonight. I'm not know for my sunny positive outlook usually but on this one (having learnt to us the AND) I think it's ok.
