Quoting Jonathan Kay: Not if that was all that it did... but a domestic robot could do all of those for you. And would sir like his Times ironed this morning? See also Prince Charles' toothpaste and warming the seat before use. Jonathan According to the wiki(yes I know but I can't be ed to delve any deeper this time in the morningQuote:A robot is a mechanical device that can perform tasks automatically. It may – but need not – be humanoid in appearance. Some robots require some degree of guidance, which may be done using a remote control, or with a computer interface. A robot is usually an electro-mechanical machine that is guided by a program or circuitry. so my examples do fulfil that criteria.

Thanks for the link. I'm surprised that Wikipedia doesn't give more weight in the definition to programmability and the ability to perform multiple tasks in distinguishing robots from other automation. But of course they overlap. Jonathan

Quoting Jonathan Kay: Robotic heart surgery in Wolverhampton The Da Vinci Surgical System The Lindbergh operation Jonathan can that be called a Robot, surely its just a posh 3d Pantograph ? I would have thought that to be called a Robot the machine would need some level of autonomy. Tim Edited by - tbird on 19 May 2013 21:51:45

I think the technology needs to go through this stage, so that haptic technology, constrained areas, automated subtasks and decision support can then be added. (A bit like the importance of the Toyota Prius.) There are lots of big problems with surgical robots, including the learning curves, the absence and difficulty of high quality controlled studies, and the immature regulatory framework. But they're being bought in big numbers. Jonathan
