Well, Derek, some of us think that anybody who has the balls to talk about politics in a sport where most of them never utter a word that isn't sponsor friendly deserves respect. And the 'personality 'thing is a misnomer - it is about achievement , and Lewis's are surely worthy of recognition? What does the guy have to do ?

Fun fact - Graham Hill never won the award , but Damon did .

A point well made John. Very few of the contenders have ever been “personalities”... love the Graham vs Damon point. IMHO Graham has more personality and he definitely won more titles

Ronnie O'Sullivan

Just to hear his acceptance speech, we need a laugh in this terrible year Clap

Isn't 'Personality' a very subjective word. A bit like whether you like or dislike someone without knowing them. As has been said it's all about achievement and title Sports Personality of the Year is an anachronism.

It is about entertainment and giving some of the lesser known sportsmen and women a higher profile.

Interesting debate......Is motor racing a sport per se......?? Or snooker??

Of course I would favour Lewis, whose efforts to galvanise support in F1 for Black Lives Matter were also noteworthy! The most successful driver ever.  Unless we had put them in the same cars we will never know if he was the best.

Has to be Lewis I think. As has been said, its not actually "personality", but achievement. And he's achieved in a massive global sport

I think it was always avowedly about achievement.
