Trump's first campaign TV advertisement.

Has anyone found any comments from him on the terrorist action in Oregon? (I'm really impressed with the lack of dramatic action by the law enforcement authorities despite all the "What if... " analogies.)

SOTUS by POTUS was interesting a couple of nights ago.

A very powerful speech from Obama.  Only a passing reference to guns, but the seat next to the First Lady was left vacant in remembrance of US gun victims.  He announced a plan to try find a cure for cancer (likening it to the push to get man to the moon) - led by the VP Joe Biden (who's son died of cancer last year).

Without mentioning any names, Obama was very critical of GOP candidates - Trump in particular.  Of great interest was the Republican response speech given by Nikki Haley.  She also seemed to have Trump in her crosshairs -

During anxious times, it can be tempting to follow the siren call of the angriest voices. We must resist that temptation.

No one who is willing to work hard, abide by our laws, and love our traditions should ever feel unwelcome in this country.

In many parts of society today, whether in popular culture, academia, the media, or politics, there's a tendency to falsely equate noise with results.

"Some people think that you have to be the loudest voice in the room to make a difference. That is just not true. Often, the best thing we can do is turn down the volume. When the sound is quieter, you can actually hear what someone else is saying. And that can make a world of difference

Rowan County Clerk, Kim Davis (famously jailed for refusing to issue marriage certificates to gay couples) was in the audience.  Who got her the ticket???

Spotted the empty chair but haven't watched the whole speech yet. Wasted a few minutes watching the Freedom Girls. "Tonstant Weader Fwowed up."

I had it in my mind that Nixon drew the same analogy between management of cancer and space exploration. But it's looking as if this a false memory. Nixon used the second half of the Second World War and it was James Watson who used the moonshot. (I happen to have a distaste for all analogies between combat and cancer.)

What's happening in Rowan County now? And did he mention... Harney County, Oregon?

Just being a bit barmy, self-opinionated with many views based on 1950s or 60s culture seem inadequate reasons to exclude him.

Thought: does he think Mad Men is contemporary (or a reality show)?

Heard several things this weekend about freedom of speech/ right not to be offended/ incitement. Wikipedia has a list of those currently and previously banned, but it doesn't include Paul Robeson for some reason.

Hadn't heard of the 'Freedom Kids' - how totally creepy and, as many have said, North Korea like.  I really didn't think it was serious - was waiting for the comedy sketch to kick in somewhere along the way.

Trump seems to have got caught out this week whilst trying to expand on his religious credential

Multiple sources (here is one I picked at random) are now saying that the GOP elders are, somewhat grudgingly, coming to the conclusion that either Trump or Cruz will be their nominee.  Some still seem to be holding out for Cruz and Trump to go head to head and for one of them ultimately to drop out, increasing the chances of a more establishment figure (Bush, Rubio) to mount a last minute surge post Iowa and New Hampshire.

Interesting to see the 'New York Values' spat pan out between Trump and Cruz.  Both sides think they came out on top in the last debate regarding this point.  It certainly gave Trump the ability to hark back to 9/11.  Cruz will not be making any friends in NY with such a statement, but he already knew than his support there was low.  He / his backers believe that the statement will help in in the Southern states.

It's really scary that Trump might be perceived as "moderate".

On Radio 4 now " The Long View" focusing on the politics of celebrity. They are starting with William Randolph Hearst.
