Just why did you buy a 7? Or a 21?

Just why did you buy a Lotus 7, or a Caterham 7, or a Caterham 21, in the first place? Confused

And what did you imagine you were going to do with it, before you actually bought it?

I really would like to know.

I was going to build a Sylva Striker - went to the factory at Manby Airfield and met Jeremy Phillips.

Split up with wife, got promoted (twice) at work and thought why not have the best. For me it was building it that appealed. That was in 1997 (registered April 98). Now have a new wife and the same car :-)

Grew up in the town of Caterham. Work not much fun in 2007 .... driving up Church Hill to visit my Dad one Saturday, decided to turn right into the showroom. Didn't fit an S3. Bought the SV next to it. The rest is history. Changed our lives. Made some great friends across Europe.

Primarily because I wanted one. Was working at lotus at the time and didn’t want to get an Elise so I bought the 21. Had that for about 10 years and needed to sell to release some money. Got the 7 a few years later. Won’t be selling that in a hurry. Wish I hadn’t sold the 21 in all honesty but needs must sometimes.

Think I've lost the plot Ian ,,my first ride in a caterham was by Graham Nearn ,,stayed at a hotel or pub at the bottom of the hill was sure as went up  the hill caterham was on the left ,,,but it was about 54 years ago now , the test drive ( he drove ) went up to a roundabout ,,then shot of down a country lane ,,,going like shit of a shovel ,coming up to a ninty right ,,my knuckles were white ,,feet nearly through floor ,,,and near cramped myself,,,magic ride ,,,that was it hooked ,,but took o other 20 years before I got my first seven

I don't think the sound of the 7 going into the car park in the prisoner was a seven. Was in a Triumph 6 cylinder?

The lotus heritage, the speed. The fact that those who knew, knew. And I wanted to be part of that. Fundamentally though, it was about the driving. Even as a young hooligan in a variety of classics( even if they hadn't achieved that status yet) I wanted to be a better driver and I hoovered up any opportunity to try something. 30 yrs later I'm the same and so are Caterhams. Just a lot faster. Still the same anologue driving that only rewards what the operator puts in. Plus the noise, the cold, the heat, the smell. You get it I'm sure!
