#31. As I said in another post it was a lotus7 for 15 years and so far a Caterham 7 for 48 years. I tell people that I'm in the Caterham 7 club, if they express an interest then I explain the lotus bit, don't get me wrong I do really like some of the lotus cars but I don't have one and the last time I saw one was over 40 years ago.

Funny thing is despite Caterham's longevity the name still doesn't ring any bells when touring abroad. When people ask what your car is, the reply 'Caterham' just brings blank looks and disinterest but as soon as you say 'Lotoose' their eyes light up and the questions start flowing.

#32 and #33 sum up the dilemma pretty well. No Lotus 7s have been made since 1973, a Lotus F1 car last won a GP in 1987, yet the name still seems to have more clout than Caterham, which is rather hard on the current custodians of the marque.

The maths may have changed a little but in my time on the team International members actually were income negative for the Club.  However given the lack of events they could attend it was always considered a cost the Club was willing to bear.

Having been a club member since 2004 this is regulary discussed by all the members who have joined since...well the last discussion. Someone invariably likes to kick it off probably out of deep boredom.  ISTR when the last vote was taken (there was a questionnaire n everyfin)  there was a substantial majority wanting the name to remain unchanged (perhaps i'm wrong and someone could correct me) anyway it was certainly a majority because the name wasn't changed. i'd like to say 51% is enough except the were a number of name choices rather than just 2.  Not sure how long ago that was 5 years?

The last discussion maybe what? 2 years ago? (which i stayed away from) gives me a memory of a general sentiment along the lines of 'you lost get over it' mentality in it from a number of members Rolleyes towards the 'the name needs changing' lot but again this might just be my jaded memory. Anyway...

Logically if it was the Caterham and Lotus Seven Club (if this is available) this would presumably keep

Caterham Owners happy

Lotus Seven owners happy (there's quite a few you know)

Caterham 21 owners happy (they have always been part of this club BTW since they started)

All other options seem to disenfranchise one of these 3 and is therefore i believe illogical.  Personally i couldn't give a hoot (that's as polite as i feel like being) about the name but i'm probably a lone voice.

Realistically what else do you expect when there's a big vote and a group of people sulk when it doesn't go the way they wanted.  I thought the club should have changed its name but the majority didn't.  It never occurred to me to keep banging on about a name change after we'd all had the opportunity to vote.

ISTR that it wasn't an either or i think there was a number of possible names to chose from. So there wasn't a big group of sulkers but lots of little groups of sulkers... And presumably some people think that after x number of years a large number of members will have changed and therefore it should happen again because the view has changed? If so how many years? or was it a once in a lifetime thing? Who decides? From an addled memory i think  I didn't vote to change the name last time because  all the other choices were really poor and as a result there seemed little point in bothering voting at all. Anyway once this dies down we can do it all again in a couple of years when we get bored. Unless the search function is easier to operate in which case some bright spark will be able to post this thread up for all the new people to read.
