Midlife crisis begun....
Thanks Stephen (and others who have commented)
This is one in particular I'm looking at relatively seriously. Hence my questions regarding gearbox and diff. https://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C1265591
Previous thread about the Sprint ratio SS gearbox and ratios.
My only observations on the car is to a) check the age of the tyres - there will be a year / week number embossed into the sidewall. Usual recommendation is to change at 5 years old. Those tyres haven't been available for a while and I expect were supplied with the kit noting the mileage! And b) the roll over bar isn't approved for club trackdays (no diagonal brace). May or may not be an issue for you.
I would check what gearbox (ford / mazda / caterham) / diff (ford / BMW) it has in relation to previously mentioned Titan LSD issues.
I'm not sure what to make of the Q plate reference - to me it feels the seller doesn't understand the meaning of Qs?? A Q plate (in the case of Caterhams) was assigned when there was more than one component that was second hand eg the gearbox and differential were reconditioned components. If it was one part then it could have an age related plate IIRC. The car you are looking at would have been a kit of all new parts so would always have an age related plate.
PS - I'm 6'1", 15s and a bit and size 11 shoes and fit in an S3
That particular car has been on the market for a very long time, which would raise my suspicions. I recall a previous post enquiring about it and the more experienced members casting aspersions about it (post may have been on another forum I can't recall). As previously mentioned, check out the established Caterham dealers as for that budget you should have no problem finding something.
Interesting point re Q plates.....
Technically a lot of Caterhams should have been Q then as the 5 speed gearbox (Type 9) and final drive (Sierra) were both reconditioned items... however when they were supplied by CC they were classed as new....
Unless there was a loop hole which permitted them to class both gearbox and final drive under the transmission heading..?
Are the brake calipers reconditioned too? Surely they don't still make them
Hi Andy. That's very kind of you and it would help to chat about things. I'm in Hemel so perhaps once the lock down is sorted I could pop over?
Thanks, intending to take your advice.
