Member Jonathan Kay Posted August 2, 2012 Member Share Posted August 2, 2012 We're counting how many people would like to join a bulk buy of a storage canister. It could be used under the bonnet. This thing. I think it's the same thing as a ToolTube, but it has yellow signs on it. They are supposed to be removable with acetone. How many interested at £6.42/unit + local delivery?Quoting sforshaw: If you don't have an Apollo tank a "Tooltube" will fit vertically where the Apollo would normally be - it's perfect for tools (obviously!) but will also fit a 1 litre SIGG bottle of oil which is better than it rolling around in the boot!Quoting sforshaw: Tooltube SIGG bottle SIGG bottle in TooltubeQuoting Grim Reaper: ebay seller in US flogging a box of 25 here No postage details though.Quoting Jonathan Kay: Thanks. I've asked how much they would charge for delivery:Quote: For 25 pcs (one box), the cost of postage via USPS is US$152.05. That's $99 + $152.05 = $251.05 = $10.04/ unit = £6.42/ unit.So far: IanW : 2 OliW: Yep Stu: 5 (or even10) Ian B: 1 (or maybe 2) Have I missed anyone so far? If anyone could pick them up in the USA they'd be a lot cheaper... Jonathan PS: First time I've done this. keybaud
Quoting Jonathan Kay: Quoting keybaud: Don't forget import duty and VAT plus customs handling charge.Thanks. Of course I have. Any advice on how to approach this? Jonathan Depending on who the delivery company is, you will either receive a bill for the tax and associated charges before they will deliver the package or they will send you an invoice afterwards. The calculations work as follows: Import duty = (cost of items + cost of postage) × duty rate for the goods in question VAT =(cost of items + cost of postage + import duty) x 0.20 Customs handling charge is usually between 15 and 25 pounds. Total bill = duty+VAT+handling charge I don't know what the duty is for tool boxes, but it used to be possible to look the value up online.Note that the duty rate is set per item type and per country imported from, so you have to lookup the correct table. Taking an estimated duty rate of 15%, the total cost for your items would be calculated as follows: items = 99 1.5 = 66 pounds, approx postage = 1501.5= 100 pounds approx import duty = 166 × 0.15= 25 pounds approx VAT = 191 ×0.2 = 38 pounds approx handling charge = 15 pounds approx Total cost = 246 pounds approx Sometimes, the package won't be charged tax at all, so the cost may be what you stated, but it is worth knowing what the worst case is. Ian B
I doubt the duty will be anything like 15%, more like 2%, but I could be wrong! It used to be available online but I think you now have to subscribe via HMRC site, however there is a phone service which will look it up for you. The numbers I have from the past are 01702 367485 or 01702 366077 (tariff classification), but knowing govt depts I suspect they've changed that - worth a try though.
