Area Representative Andrew Gilbert Posted January 28, 2020 Area Representative Share Posted January 28, 2020 My car originally came with a 'caterham type 9 s/c with long first' gearbox. It was changed out when the car was resold by Caterham Cars 3 years after its initial build at the request of the 'new' owner and now runs a std type 9. So looking for items to return it to its 'factory spec if I can, so if it needs work, damaged etc then pm me, if not I'll look at alternatives.A nice to have really, parts in the garage until such time we can make the change. Wrightpayne
That sort of box is generally used for competition so if 2nd hand a check / rebuild may be prudent. I bought a 2nd hand 6 speed with 11 hours use after rebuild - 2 broken gears and three bearings later I'd have been better waiting and paying for a box just back from refresh with zero miles.S/C gear kits still available so could just build up a new one around a tired 5 speed. Just weigh up the costs of 2nd hand s/c and rebuild Vs 2nd hand 5 speed, gear kit and rebuild.Ear plugs / defenders definitely needed! I remember going in a stripped out mk2 mini with straight cut box, diff and drop gears and it was deafening but the sort of noise (scream) a car nut loves. Good luck with the search! Area Representative Andrew Gilbert Posted January 28, 2020 Author Area Representative Share Posted January 28, 2020 I had one in my previous 7, quaife unit, yes it was loud. Loved it for competition but not so for touring!I think I may go for a stronger type 9 box, have one built as I did find the old one very positive when on track (sprints etc), but look at the options available to improve its touring capabilities. Tazio
Talk to Steve Perks at Tracsport, his semi-helical gear set with long first, is a lovely box, and if you can afford it, his new gearcase... I had the same S/C gearset as you had in one of my old HPCs, the semi helical is a much better box for roadwork, a joy to use.
7 wonders of the world
As above Steve can offer a choice of first gear ratios in the semi heli kit 2.48;1 or 2.29;1I run the later and its perfect for a 7 - should be as I was the one who nagged Steve for over two years to get this made !! Area Representative Andrew Gilbert Posted January 28, 2020 Author Area Representative Share Posted January 28, 2020 Thankyou all, well I can see where I'm going to go to now! I was reading their Web page and it does sound like the way forward.
Wrightpayne
Gearboxes are expensive whichever route you go - my 6sp ended up costing £2200 to buy and fix with some additional 'special' mods by Steve.
jpath8
Andrew,I have the Type 9 with s/c gearset in my HPC that was original from 1994, as my car is about 240 hp and needs the s/c gears so I dont destroy the box every time I tough the go pedal. I personally hate the s/c gearset though and have been looking at replacement options like Tracsport or Quiafe. If you are desperate for an original box with s/c gears let me know, cause this exactly that. Also it has been modified in the past with a fluid drain port to make fluid changes easier.. I have been thinking about selling my box and getting a good one to rebuild with high strength semi-helica gears anywaysl. Maybe we could work out some kind of swap.
