Over 70s face driving curfews, trackers and distance limits

Not a happy read for Caterham owners at or approaching 70, if this discussion gains traction.

Insure it in a younger family members name and be a named driver on th policy.

If I read it correctly it’s actually to allow those who when they have to reapply for their license with certain conditions that would result in it being revoked they can continue driving. Possibly a good thing for those in areas that are remote. Could be dangerous obviously as they are still more likely to be involved in an accident than a healthy over 70 yr old. Not exactly as the op put tbh. Maybe some 7 drivers would have had to stop using their car but with this they wouldn’t

Meanwhile, at what age ones ability to drive should be assessed is legitimate question.  Excluding disease eyes exhibit age-related changes in performance as we age — particularly as we reach our 60s and beyond.  As we age, muscles that control our pupil size and reaction to light lose some strength. This causes the pupil to become smaller and less responsive to changes in ambient lighting.  People in their 60s need three times more ambient light for comfortable reading than those in their 20s and the speed with which we adapt to changes to light levels slows too.  I can certainly sense this when driving at night, obviously this is worse because other cars' headlights are FAR brighter than they were 20 years ago, they are generally positioned higher as so many cars exhibit middle-aged spread and the contrast in rural areas is much greater than in London (where I was living 20 years ago). 

We all ought to acknowledge and accept the changes which form normal aging.

If you are prepared to moan about the driving standards of young drivers don't complain when the focus turns your way.

Personally I think it should be easier and cheaper for young drivers to get insured as we should accept some level of risk at both ends of the age scale.

If you were me Doug ,and two of your 16 year old granddaughters ,,were out on the road you may have a change of mind ,,,lovely girls ,,reasonably sensible ,,but 16 and driving ,,?

I hope it does not get any traction having just upgraded my 1600K series Supersport (158bhp) to a new 420R.  I am 71 in couple of weeks.  When I renewed my licence I was so annoyed at the thought of losing the C1 and other licence classes I had had since I passed driving test, I applied the for commercial licence in order to keep them (whether I use them or not).  This involved a medical and eye tests both with and without glasses, all of which I passed.  The Doc said I was the only 70 year old he knew of taking no medication of any sort.  I hope this healthy state of affairs lasts for a few few years to come.  I'd be really annoyed If had to lose the car, although I'm sure my daughter would grab it if possible.  And again living out in the sticks we never ever see a bus, so need our own transport.

#5 you are correct, this discussion is related to certain conditions...presently. Technology though is a real enabler here and IMO overtime will trend to normality, especially from the telematics industry to expand their industry. So whilst this discussion is for 70+ year olds with certain conditions and arguably a useful control, the passage off time will migrate it to other demographics.....we already have it in the young driver market. Once telematics gets switched on an agile, fast accerating car will be a no-no.

Honda jazz owners club must be worried !!!

I went to a speed awareness course a few years ago and the car park was full of honda Jazz, most of them were in denial that they were speeding .

No affence to fellow members owning a honda Jazz (Mugen or standard) or to my brother in law who actualy got all the brochures for a new evoque and had to settle on a Jazz under strict instructon from my sister in law.
