Shatner boldly going to where no 90 y.o. has gone before

William Shatner, the actor who portrayed Captain Kirk on the original "Star Trek" TV series will launch into space on Oct. 12, 2021 aboard Blue Origin's New Shepard spacecraft. Liftoff is set for 9:30 a.m. EDT (1330 GMT) from Blue Origin's Launch Site One in West Texas with Shatner and three others aboard.  When the 90-year-old actor launches, he will become the oldest person ever to fly in space.

It is a pity that Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley and James Doohan can't be the "other three" but James Doohan is of course already up there.

At least he will be breaking the 100 mile barrier which will earn him the right to be called an Astronaut. Unlike the Virgin 'Galactic' fiasco.

Good luck to Shatner/Kirk. I wish that I had friends with so much $$$$$ & a launch vehicle to play with.

Didn't they change the rules to say you can't be an astronaut unless part of the crew? (So not just a passenger) Think SpaceX fixed this by having 6 months training, things to do during the trip and the ability to "take over" if things went wrong with the automated systems.

I thought you had to do at lest one complete orbit to be classed as an astronaut, hence Alan Shepherd, who dd a sub orbital flight before Gagarin did his orbital flight, did not get to be regarded as the first man in space.

Or do I have that all wrong (as I do with so much in life)?

Confused

Great photo Doug Thumb Up

I don't think Shatner will be at all bothered about whether or not he is officially classed as an astronaut, he will just be glad to have flown into space aged 90 and will always be remembered as one of, if not THE, most famous Space Ship captains of all time, alongside Buck Rogers and Dan Dare.

Astronaut, designation is derived from the Greek words for “star” and “sailor,” commonly applied to an individual who has flown in outer space. More specifically, “astronaut” refers to those from the United States, Canada, Europe, and Japan who travel into space. Those Soviet and later Russian individuals who travel into space are known as cosmonauts (from the Greek words for “universe” and “sailor”). China designates its space travelers taikonauts (from the Chinese word for “taikaway” and the Greek word for “sailor”).  In Scotland the designation is Dreadnoughts from the Clan MacNab motto Timor Omnis Abesto (Let fear be far from all).
