Advice on helmet

I want to pick the brains of the assembled experience about helmets.

My eldest son, Archie, is keen to get involved in the Championship and we have a (tentative) plan for him to try out the Curborough August event as a Clubman entry with a view to entering next year as a novice (dual driving in my car).

As he may not continue past this test event, I am reluctant to shell out for a brand new helmet for him. Any advice on what to go for and where to get a serviceable 'starter' helmet?

It will have added use as a track day 'spare' especially as the current restrictions prevent hiring helmets for the day.
