my Lidli action cam battery has had its day and not changeable or able to rig un power it time to my again.

I got a cheap ebay thing long story so not out of pocket but its not worth the plastic its made from. 

So what are people using? would like ability to see the run on my phone.

After my last setup packed up (a couple of days before Rockingham ......), I've bought a refurbished GoPro 4 black via eBay.

I wanted the facility to choose the angle of view and resolution, use an external mic, and monitor and control via WiFi.

I'm more than happy with my choice.

The WiFi app works well with either my iPhone, or my android tablet.

I'm currently using a cheap eBay mic adaptor, and the same 25 year old microphone I've been using since starting using in car video.

The picture quality is exceptional, even at quite low resolution (720p still looks good on a 40" TV).

I have Go Pro and Drift cameras - all of my videos on line have been shot with the drift cameras as they're the ones I reach for every time.

Is anyone using a GoPro HERO6 (or a HERO5)? They seem to get rather a lot of negative reviews (about 20% 1 star on Amazon) with the software getting the most criticism followed by battery life. I'm also interested in the Garmin Virb Ultra 30 but that seems to get even more bad reviews (25% 1 star) with battery life being particularly poor plus frame drops and connectivity issues also raised although the software seems better.

I currently use a Racekeeper data-logger but it only records in standard definition 4:3 aspect ratio and that's beginning to look very dated and my YouTube videos are pretty poor resolution now. I want something with GPS so I can show a speedometer, G-force and track map on the videos hence why I am looking at the HERO5/6 or Virb 30. They are significantly cheaper than a replacement HD video data-logger but still quite pricey so they need to work as required.

I use a Hero 5 and it's all pretty positive.  Image quality is simply fantastic. 

The one thing I'd say is that the fact that the unit itself is waterproof (so doesn't need a case) is both a positive, but also the only negative I can think of, which is the difficulty of adding an external mic.  Without butchering an external case, using an external mic means opening up one of the normally sealed doors, meaning it's no longer waterproof. 

Battery life and software seem pretty good to me.  Happy to lend it to you if you want a play?
