Acousta-fil exhaust packing

I have been reccomended Acousta-fil exhaust packing to refil my Duratec silencer however due to the size it is going to cost about £70 to fill it. Anyone with experiance of this stuff good or bad?

Where is the best place to buy it ( there seems to be lots on e-bay) . My silencer is 700mm long and 180mm diaso loks like I need about 4 metres of the stuff but the largest acousta-fill is 600mm wide, so any issues with jointing it or overlapping it?

I use this in the new silencers I have been making. Its easy to use and you know you have the correct amount as the manufacturer calculates the length you need after you provide the dimensions of your silencer.

You simply can not go wrong.

If you can not find the correct size sections give me a call as I can help out.

its been in mine all year, still going well. from memory when i packed it, packed is the wrong description, i put in 2 1/2 sheets, they were a loose fit inside my 7 1/2 " can. I had mine fro OJZ at newark who do mail order, give lance a call. here cant remember the price but it was nothing like the price of long strand etc..

Mine is working well in my Powerspeed a year on, also used it in the bikes Micron. I used less than I thought, only bought about £30 worth on ebay and it was enough.

I'm not sure we are talking about exactly the same stuff.

The Acoustafill is a woven blanket made to any width you require (although they do tend to have standard widths in stock) and an exact length cut as one piece.

For example in the new CiC silencers they are 700mm long 7 1/4" dia and have a 2 1/2" perf pipe in the centre. This dimension requires 3.1m of Acoustafill.

When we make the CiC Silencer with the Cat inside we need to trim out about 1m of blanket where the Cat itself fits as we simply can not get the blanket tight enough. (As would be expected).

I am at least - mine came direct as per the other thread . . .

I bought double the suggested amount for my exhaust, cut it in two, rolled it up around a tube and struggled to get it into the Powerspeed can. Cut a bit off, and stuggled again - but got it in.

Sounded wonderfully muffled for a bit . . . but now it's not. The car did spend a long time not long afterwards sat at high revs/high speed for hours at a time on various motorways heading south to Troyes in France and then onto Valence, so it may have burnt it up and out of the tail pipe.

I am also very happy with my Acousta-fil, and this is why

Sound meter readings, which are

Old Caterham standard packing after 7000 miles @ 4500rpm = 101.6 dBA

When new, Acousta-fil packing April 2009 @ 4500rpm = 91.4 dBA

Today, Acousta- fil packing after, track days, rolling road session, and long trip to South West France, 6000 miles in total @ 4500rpm = 91.5 dBA

i was advised to put it in very loose, this is because the blanket grows considerably with heat , try a bit on a flame, i would think if it is put in tight when new it will compact too much and not absorb any sound. my 200bhp VX is around 95db at 5000rpm here was a lot quieter like thishere tested at 88 db at 5000rpm static at Cadwell, but it used to drag the road a bit 😬 *thumbdown*

There is an Acoustafil calculator http://www.thermalvelocity.co.uk/calc/calc2.asp

So for example on a K series Superlight R3/4/500 STD Caterham titanium silencer it suggests 2.5m (500 x 50)

As Nolimits has said above the manufacture Saveguard will calculate your required length and they calculated 2.356m to be correct for my Superlight, this as Andy Whittle suggests in the previous thread this is hard work to squeeze into the can (successfully achieved though) and therefore is tightly packed. I did query with Saveguard there pictures on their web site to make sure that I was doing this correctly which they confirmed, they did give an explanation for there loosely packed pictures but I have forgotten what that was. It could be that they do various Fabric Styles, I am using S2 Glass as it works up to 900 Degrees .

Nolimits do you use S2 Glass and does this mean you pack your exhausts tightly or loose?

Acoustafil ZT1 Fabric 1000gsm x 700mm wide is the product I am using.

This is the product info page.

I guess I am packing loose as although its not "easy" to slide over the carbon skin its not difficult either. I wind the fabric pretty tightly but I could always go tighter. Cling film over to keep it in place as you slide the skin over. (As recommended by Saveguard as it melts away).

As I posted above dims given to Saveguard and they told me what I needed.
