Backlash

Is there a way to measure backlash on my diff without taking it out and using a clock gauge ? Perhaps by measuring degrees of prop rotation, It sounds a bit clonky at the minute, and its not  the A frame bush.

if its a Sierra final drive then yes pop the back cover off wash the oil off the CWP and mount a DTI on the crown wheel.

Normally clonks don`t come from diff backlash, backlash between pinion and crown wheel produces whine/growl

Clonks could be from excess float in the sun and planet gears, pinion bearing or driveshafts,(if all else, bushes etc.,is secure)

Have you checked the A frame bush....?

As another Live Axle owner, things that jump to mind..... (as i've had both over the years)

a) half shafts, so jack back end up and give the wheels a good push & pull, any movement.

b) front bushes on A frame, disconnect the rear A Frame bush, and check for movement in front bushes,
