Dansuddaby
Discovered my Banner is as dry as a pub in Covid times. Is their any sense in trying to top it up with new fluids and recharge or am I wasting my time? New battery on order from Tanya so just whether a I can keep a second d one spare topped and charged. Thanks all
Roadsport06
No harm in trying, but why have the cells become dry? Are you using a "smart" battery conditioner, or a "dumb" trickle charger?
Dansuddaby
Just a dumb trickle charger which is telling me it has a charge but clearly not.
Roadsport06
A trickle charger will just keep a current flowing and will cause the water to evaporate away. You need a smart battery conditioner like ctek or accumate, they monitor the voltage and only when it drops does it charge.
Gordon GWF
I use the small CTEK XS 0.8 which has more than paid for itself by leaving it connected. Just checked my receipts and surprised to find that the current Banner battery I fitted in April 2011, rarely needs topping up and still holds a charge well. Must be due for a replacement soon but will be buying a Banner again for sure.
Dansuddaby
Ok thanks Gordon - that's good to know. Need to invest in a conditioner unit in that case.
JonT
This gets a good reccomendation on SELOC - I've just bought one and works ok. Much cheaper than CTEK etc https://www.amazon.co.uk/Maypole-7423A-Battery-Charger-Electronic/dp/B009A83P1E
Roadsport06
One other thing Dan, when you come to charge your potentially knackered battery it may need to go on a dumb charger for a while as the smart charger may not detect it as the voltage may be too low. JonT's link is a fantastic price. Also worth carrying a lithium battery booster. Mine has already got me out of bother when I had a battery on the way out. Curly
Be careful not to overfillI did and it leaked acid - good excuse for anupgrade but definitely not advised...
Roy Blyth
I haven't topped a battery up since... well, in the days when you always had to top batteries up!My Banner looks like it needs a top up, but I can't see up to what level? Is there meant to be a marker in there somewhere, or should I just make sure they are all just above the top of the plates? The Banner website is worse than useless
SM25T
Usually a plastic moulding in each cell to cover, or something hanging down from each fill plug. Do charge the battery immediately after topping up with deionised water.
Steve Sheldon
Cover the little black lug that you see just above the plates when you look into each cell with distilled water. Do not overfill. Needs checking regularly.
