CtrMint
Hi All,Another build query.I've installed my heater into my car (S3 420). The install of the heater has gone well apart from the fact the cable appears to be excessively long. The length causes the cable to bulge badly against the pedal box. I've seen pics of other cars and the curve of the heater cable in those cars suggest the their cables are no where near as long.I've checked Caterham's parts website and there seems to be numerous cables types, so I'm wondering if I've got the wrong cable. Does anyone know the difference in the various cables, may be the lengths, Thanks
SM25T
If it is still a simple cable with a solid wire rod inner and a metal outer that is clamped in the required place on the diverter valve .. can you withdraw the inner cable and cut off any excess length on the outer. Member Jonathan Kay Posted October 20, 2018 Member Share Posted October 20, 2018 What Ian says.Cutting outer cables/ "housings" neatly isn't trivial. Advice from Sheldon Brown. On the bikes I use Park Tools CN-4 cutters or a cutting disc on a Dremel. But a trip to a friendly local bike shop might be a good solution.Jonathan
Jim 123
Perhaps you have been shipped an SV cable in error?
John Vine
Is there any indication on the packaging/bag of the part number? What does the end of the cable look like: a loop? an angled bend? And how long is the cable you have?JV
CtrMint
I couldn't see a part number of on it.The end is a coiled loop to go over the valve.WIll need to get the cable off the car to test.

Jim 123
I'll measure the cable length on my S3 tomorrow and let you know.
CtrMint
struggling to find the cradle clip too, and I'm now wondering if I should have sorted the clip before mounting the heater.
Jim 123
Cradle clip or cable clip? If it is the latter, the heater cable outer is retained by a sandwich plate that comes already fitted as part of the heater valve body, and is the inboard-most part of the installed valve assembly. Perhaps the small hex nut that holds the sandwich plate in place has come adrift before shipping? There are no other clips to hold the cable. With the battery in position and the cable routed behind it, does it still look you have excess cable length?
CtrMint
thanks JIm, the valve is fine, with the cable clip, however I understand there needs to be a cradle clip and zip tie the other side of the heater itself.I'll try and upload the diagram......to illustrate
Jim 123
Just checked the manual and I see the clip you mention. I stand corrected, let me check on my car tomorrow.Off to pub now.

CtrMint
thanks. There is a hole in the heater already, but as you look down. I'd assumed that was where the retainer went. having never put a rivet in before, I'd no experience on which to basis my conclusion.
CtrMint
here is how the cable is currently looking without the cable tie with the rivet.
CtrMint
A bit more progress, I've now located the Cradle Clip (KR6G5), there are 5 of them in Fastener Pack - Chassis Fixture (Kit car only) ZCH01.
Jim 123
Mark, I have checked my S3 installation and hopefully the following is helpful:The length of the metal spigot from the engine side face of the firewall is 85 mm. The black coated outer cable from the end of the spigot is 590 mm longI suspect the hole you see in the heater plenum when looking down is a water drain hole. My car has one on each side.I recall that I did not fit the retaining clip that you mentioned, principally as I did not think it necessary once I had the heater valve in place, and I was also not keen to pop a rivet into the fairly brittle heater casing. My cable routes very much like your photo. The cable outer curves to touch the pedal box and routes between the brake master cylinder and it's lower fixing stud. It then follows a direct path behind the battery and into the heater valve clip.
John Vine
Things have clearly changed over the years. The heater cable on my 2008 S3 is routed like this: My Assembly Guide made no mention of an extra clip on the front of the heater box, and I never fitted one. A later AG shows this:Unless the layout of the pedal box etc has changed, I can't see that the extra clip does a great deal. Or is it an IVA requirement?JV
CtrMint
Thanks for the detail and support.I measured the length of my metal spigot and it too is 85mm, although I did struggle to get an accurate measure of the cable after that. So opted to move on with the build. I'm happy I can go back to it another day. Although it is good to hear that you didn't fit the rivet and that your cabling is similar. May be its fine. CtrMint
John I was thinking the same, an IVA requirement, but then it is just a heater cable.
