Car in for a service.... 2 “recalls”?

My car is in for a service (2012 self built Roadsport SV). I heard late last year during hibernation time that there are two things that need to be “fixed” on orders from head office, but I was not told what. When I took the car in, they said they would need to go and check the records for what needs to be done.

The interesting (for me) thing is that there may be four things that need some work, so I am wondering if these overlap with Caterham’s info, or if some things are okay or already addressed:

1: Sticking brake calipers?

2: Routing of the brake line on top of the de Dion.

3: The Diff bracket for the BMW diff was a pig to install because the holes matched so ally and I have heard of stress cracks. If this is something that needs doing, I pity the poor souls who has to get those bolts out.

4: The bobbins quality three part radiator. They are definitely replacing this because it is leaking. But I don’t know if there has been a hush hush recall/replacement of these or not.

It might be an expensive service, or it may be fine. I shall have to see. But I shall, for now, assume the worst.

Thank you for the info on the diff.

In this case, I don’t need an estimate. The three part radiator is a crime against humanity and I was planning on replacing it soon. If it is covered by the guarantee I will be delighted, and if I need to pay, I am rid of the mess of the old one. Win win.

the only thing on my mind is finding a local garage I can trust. I can do a lot myself, but I like having a pro check everything is ok from time to time.

John it may be helpful to mention that, if it listed is on the DVSA website it will be a reportable safety problem that relates to a required corrective action to protect the safety of the public.  This has to be backed up by the OEM taking clear steps to contact owners from a defined VIN range and "recalling" the car to a dealer for an FOC inspection and repair. The most recent owner details in this situation are supplied by DVLA and the OEM should monitor correction rates to define if further follow up contact with owners is needed.

Running alongside this, most OEM's will take "policy" decisions on, what they view as non safety critical issues, but where they see unreasonable risk to predicted reliability or durability of a vehicle. With this there is no DVSA reporting, and they will not contact owners to recall cars.  However the OEM will notify dealers of VIN details of cars to be checked and modified during "next visit to the workshop".  These next visit tweaks are usually, but not always 100% FOC, with the dealer submitting his bill to the OEM.

The rerouting of the brake line is together with the replacement diff carrier. On my 2011 Roadsport SV, the brake line (which is just placed wherever you liked in the original build) was about 2 mm from the 'ding' on the dedion caused by the diff carrier bolt head! The new brake line is just bent around where the bolts would hit, although the new carrier would not have the same problem as the bolts are recessed.

If that help!

Radiator. I have a 2009 7 with the infamous 3 part rad. A friend of mine acquired a similar 7 shortly after and the rad leaked almost immediately and was replaced at his expense by Caterham. I had a good look at the failed rad. and found that the tabs that are bent over to hold the plastic in place were not crimped down properly and some of them were not even bent over at all!

So ...I got my mole wrench out and recrimped all the tabs on my rad.  that was 9 years ago and no leaks since!

If you still have an original 3 part (plastic collectors item) rad. its worth a go...on the other hand the ally ones are nicer!

My radiator was recrimped two years ago. It didn’t survive much longer. I am really pleased to be getting rid of it.

The replacement radiator took a while to arrive so I have another week to wait until I get the car back.

Pip, i cannot believe that a 2012 car has not had the new diff carrier or that there was not a notification back in 2012/13?

Did you build the car ? It took around 9 months from CC knowing they had an issue with the then new BMW diffs set up and getting the final ( second) rectification which was a new carrier and I think it was a modified diff back plate with recessed bolts heads ?

As noted the pipe attached to the de dion was in cases being pinched as there was not set positioning as I remember.

Look forward t hearing what the outcome is when you take the car in

I built it myself. I got the kit in around April 2012. Maybe things have been done on the QT in a previous service and I never got informed. It will be interesting when I am back at the Dealer.

attached (if everything works) are a few photos of offending pieces. Hopefully the brake line positioning looks ok. I think the positioning was defined quite clearly. But it doesn’t mean I did it right, either!

and photos of the back of the diff and the hole positioning:

My car is in Germany so it is at Hoffmann Rink.

it is there at the moment, so close up photos aren’t possible. I will find out more when I collect it on Saturday.

i remember the BMW Diff recall thread too. Of course, people using their car on track started seeing issues before the daisy pluckers like me...
