Cockpit Heat - Solutions

Afternoon all

I know this is a bugbear for many and I've read the various posts about lagging primaries/heat reflective material etc etc  but I just wondered if anyone has had any joy with electric cooling fans inside the cockpit ?

The temp in my Xflow gets unbearable in the passenger side ( to the extent that SWMBO is not keen on anything other than a short jaunt in mild weather). A while ago I fitted a 12v socket into my dashboard (powers the TomTom) and have seen a pair of 12v oscillating fans that can be mounted under the dash with a bit of thought (bought for £15).

I suppose it might just push the hot air about but they're pretty powerful and can be whipped in and out of the car quickly so it might be a decent fix for the summer months...

Not had chance to fit them yet but just curious to see if it's an approach that's worked for anyone else ?

My attempts,

Wrapping exhaust pipes from block to outside.

Applying thermostat silver mat insulation to bulkhead.

Fitted tx:4 4 taxi heater cutoff pipes connected to a mini push pull choke hidden under dash. Theory being to prevent hot water circulating through the heater until wanted, preventing a hot spot above knees.

Hendrix, I'll be interested in pics of the fans fitted. Best of luck.

I'm having some success with fans that draw air out of the footwells and pump it out of the louvres in the bonnet. This is basically the reverse flow to the Caterham 'fresh air' heater. I've also come to the conclusion that a lot of the heat is being generated by the gearbox as there wasn't nearly as much of a problem with the 4 speed box. Attempts to cool the gearbox and tunnel have so far been a complete failure.

https://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/motorsport/driver-cooling - I particularly like the top with pockets for ice blocks *biggrin*

On a more serious note, I think one of our Dubai members had some ducts fitted to the side of the car to channel air into the footwell although this might not be so good on a rainy day.

That will be me then stridey ! with the bath plug under my brake pedal !

very nice inflation of trouser leg at about 60mph

Nice while touring in france !

well worth doing this mod

used 50 mm air duct hose similar to carb heat piping in light aircraft

cable tied to  front right hand side chassis tube running along past oil filter to back of pedal box where your 2 inch pop waste is fitted.

  • 1 year later...

Fell your pain. Been there and this winters project is to strip the interior and replace lined with heat reflective foil. Last summer we had cockpit temperatures in excess of 40 deg whilst on the NC500. Something had to be done. This is after we had wrapped the headers to keep radiant heat in the engine bay down

Website is crap but product is thin, strong and feels up to the job. Cut to shape and glue on with high temperature contact adhesive.
