marvingbiggsicloud.com
Sorry hardly know anything mechanically but Does anyone know if there is a way of finding a faulty coil pack , did a track day at bedford autodrome some time ago and had a misfire / not running correctly at the end of the day . Was told its probably a coil pack , have run the car since briefly with no problem , pulled like a train etc etc .I assume it will only happen again when really hot / at my next rack day which is saturday ! any way i can find out which one it is and change before hand ? revilla
What engine do you have?
simon_h
If one is starting to break down with heat, vibration etc and they are the same age chances are they both will start to do it. Just replace them both with new
marvingbiggsicloud.com
Hi Guys2.0 duratec , 200hp yes had a couple of people say just replace the lot , probably me just being tight !
AG2728
I had a similar problem with my 420. It would run fine until after about 15 minutes track time and then I would get a misfire. Let it cool down and it would be fine until really hot again. It never happened on the road so it seemed to be temperature related.I fitted a new set of coil packs and next track day, the misfire occurred again. I took it to Northampton Motorsport who managed to replicate the issue on their rollers and it turned out to be a faulty throttle position sensor. Alan Reeves
marvin, if you are in SX/SY area I have a new spare set you can test but AG might have the answer
simon_h
My assumption, incorrectly, was a k series. If duratec individual coils it can be the coil wiring sub loom breaking down. They can fail due to vibration. Might be worth getting the r500 version which is much more flexible wiring than the standard one and trying that
aerobod - near CYYC
Even with the upgraded sub-loom on the Duratec, it can still be a faulty connector to the coil due to vibration. When my car was 5 Years old, the #1 cylinder connector on the upgraded loom failed giving an intermittent misfire, a new sub loom with foam tape applied to the coil cover to stop the connectors vibrating, solved the problem. John Vine
Agree about the upgraded sub-loom. In my case, that proved to be a 100% fix. Depending on year, your car may already have one.I've never tried it, but it might be worth asking a Ford dealer if they can test each COP (coil-on-plug). I take it the misfire doesn't last long enough for you to detect which primary is cooler than the others? An infra-red thermometer would help here. What spark plugs are fitted? Common Duratec ones are FoMoCo TRAP6-13 and NGK BR7EFS. A known snag with the former is that the wide gap (1.3mm) can over-stress the COP. The usual fix is to close the gap to 1.0mm.JV

L66TEY
Sounds like you are fully covered Marvin. Well hope so, as was planning on coming over to Bedford in the afternoon, but for a passenger ride and not to be your mechanic :D Chris
