In all the postings on types of oil I have never read anything about Comma oil. Does anybody have an opinion or any info that would be useful. Also, how does Comma compare in price? My habit is to select a grade first and then look at each brand's range and find the synthetic that fits the best. Because I am as susceptible as everyone else to marketing, only a small number of brands get considered. (Do you hear that, CommaGirl, I am susceptible to marketing influence... smile.gif). There is also a thinner Syner-Z but I think the thicker stuff suits my car more as it runs pretty hot and I do warm it up before letting it loose! Syner-Z is what the factory fills the R500 with. Peter Carmichael Posted October 22, 2000 Share Posted October 22, 2000 Stewart, pay attention. For hydraulic followers you need runny. New engine has mechanical followers and 1500 more rpm. Amyway Syner G is about £18/5 litres at redline components, and the 5w40 viscosity suits my car fine with no loss of pressure after 20 minites of hard driving on a circuit. Mobil 0w40 gives worringly low oil pressure below 3000 rpm (i.e <30psi) Haven't tried motorsport 15w40 Mobil 1 (as PC has) and dont intend to until I can see real added value. My engine's worth more that the tenner difference between the Comman and Mobil so it comes down to what's best. Since most engines in Caterhams spend most of their life (I hope) running hot and being thrashed soundly I think it's safe to assume "anything"W50 is the way to go. And also, since most people carefully warm their engines before taking to the road the "15" shouldn't concern anyone. A 0W40 is OK if you use your car hard when the engine's cold. I understood it was now legal as long as they didn't buy it duty free (which no longer exists between England and the rest of the EU does it?), so we should organise a transit excursion for the purposes of buying all the Mobil 1 you can fit into a van. There are limits for what C&E reckon to be reasonable; these limits are large. There are new laws that mean they can confiscate your cargo and your car if you are caught. Also the price is quite different depending on the grade: less than 200FF for 5W50 and much more ( in the average of 240 FF) for 0W40. Unfortuneately, I was unable to take advantage, but next time I have my own car down there, I will! Trouble is the supermarkets were all sold out by the middle of race weekend! Could be worth trying to arrange a discount with a French supplier to get it even cheaper next year? The 4l cans of Mobil 1 sold in France are made in France . I have been using it from the beginning on my '97 1.6 K Seven with satisfaction. It meets the same quality specs as Mobil 1 (and is certified SAE), except that Mobil claims that their oil "exceeds" these specs. My reasoning is that there is only Mobil in France to be able to synthetize this kind of high spec oil, so it must be made by Mobil, not in some backyard ...or it may be Syner-G ( I think not imported here) Hope I am right... BP now owns Castrol and sells lubricants under its own name,Castrol and Duckhams. I haven't been able to find out who owns Comma. Companies house says they are private but I suspect they may be in partnership or be a minority stake in one of the big boys and hence use the big boys technology. By the way have a look at their web site downsloads. Lots of Caterhams AND wait for it ................. COMMA GIRLS !
