revilla
Engine properly hot, remove all the plugs and unplug the crank sensor to stop it trying to fire. Compression tester screwed into each plug hole in turn, crank it on full throttle (important!) until the reading settles. You're looking for variations in the peak reading across cylinders and the time it takes to settle to start with. If you find big differences >10% you need to dig further; if a teaspoon of oil into the cylinder (no more) improves it dramatically it suggest rings, if not it suggests valves. There's a lot more you can read into.
p.mole1
I think you are supposed to do the test with the throttle fully open?

anthonym
thanks chaps - can't do the test yet due to engine hot requirement (she's in bits in a freezing garage) - so I will return here for these notes when it becomes possible. I could have sworn this advice was already in techtalk, but I couldn't find it. Anthony
